M91/30 Ex-Sniper found at Big-5

I picked up a M91/30 at Big-5 only because it had those
two welded-over screws still in the receiver. $89.99 OTD.
How do most folks remove those two screws?

I picked mine up there also, Paul. I just left the metal pegs in, but if you want to take them out to install a scope mount, you will have to grind down the weld on the outside and use something to work them out. I'm not sure which ones are threaded and which are just guide-holes, so, I'd suggest assuming they're all threaded and trying to twist them all out, so that you don't destroy threads. Plus, you'll need to buy a new bolt housing with a bent-bolt to clear the scope. It may be easier to just buy a scope mount that installs on the rear sight, replacing the rear sight leaf and just leave everything else. These sniper rifles were selected for their superior accuracy, so, as long as you can hold steady, it will shoot as good as it looks.

I've left mine in and it shoots great and looks great. I really don't mind iron sights, but my range is 25 yards at the back. Anything past 25 yards would really be a pain in the butt on these old iron sights. I use glasses. ;-)

Congrats on your purchase, we want pics!

Just_A_Car: Is there any other way to get these four items out?
Mechanical Designer at work suggests drilling a really small pilot
hole through the centers of the two screws, for starters.
(2 threaded screws and 2 posts.)

Receiver Only: ExSnipe

I was thinking about the pilot hole idea also, but didn't want to recommend it as I wasn't sure how to proceed from there. Also, as you mentioned on the pictures, they are welded in at the outside, so you'll need to grind them down. After getting the pilot holes in, I can only think that you'd have to get something in there that would hold them well enough to be able to twist them and be sure it wouldn't slip. *shrug*

Thank you Very Much for the beautiful pictures! I've got some not-so-great pictures of my ex-sniper in a thread titled "Popped My Mosin Cherry". As you can see from one of the pictures, we both got 1943 Izzy ex-snipers. *high-five*

As for all your questions regarding the stampings, check this out: Russian and Soviet Mosin Nagant Marks Which does answer most of your questions, like 'Yes, that is the CCCP stamp'. I highly recommend going to 7.62x54r.net as it will be your bible for the Mosin. Also, definitely check out the Ammo evaluations about 2/3 the way down the page; they are great if you're interested in purchasing good-shooting, cheap surplus ammo.

New MN Scout Scope Mount

There is a new series of scout scope mounts available that replace the rear sight with no gunsmithing needed. There is a long and short model. The short model is for short EER scopes (2.5X) and the long version is for 4X and larger EER scopes. This new series also has a full threaded bolt and locking nut so the mount can't work loose like the earlier versions.

Tallyman, is this your product? If so, send me an IM, I've got some questions. I've been thinking about scoping one of my Mosins.

Removing the screws from an ex-Pu sniper

Just an FYI -- there are two threaded holes which would be the two holes closest together - the two outside holes are not threaded and are the pin holes
I have seen several different methods
1. Center punch the screw from the inside of the receiver and drill a small hole through the center of the screw -- then take a drill bit the same size or JUST slightly bigger and touch the outside of the receiver to bevel it where the small holes came through -- then use an extractor to remove the screws
When you mount the base to the receiver you screw it on and check to see if the pin holes line up - if they do drill through them and there you go -- if they do not line up redrill them but do not go completely through the receiver ( as you do not want to see the old pins and the news ones ) and then super glue the pins in the holes after you cut them to the right size.
2. You center punch the screws from the inside of the receiver and starting small drill a hole through the center of the screw - then increment the size fo the drill bits until you are VERY VERY VERY VERY close to the threads in the receiver and then run a correct size tap through the screw holes this should take the remaining parts of the screws out -- then do the pins as above
3. I have heard that some guys have taken the new mounting screws that are the correct size and have screwed them into the holes form the inside of the receiver and some of the welds are loose so this will push the old screws out
I am getting ready to do this myself and I have not decided how I am going to do it as of yet
Here is a pic of one of the Pu snipers Ireceived from Samco Global that came from Yugoslavia that are true snipers that the Yugos just removed the scopes and mounts -- holes were already there and the bolts were already bent -- like I said the Yugos just removed the scope and mounts so it was pretty easy -- just screwed the base on to the receiver and that was it -- and yes the scope and mounts are WWII originals

The serial number has been blacked out. I have seen this done before. Why is this done on these posts?

thats what i was gonna say marion....but i feel same way....only other reason i wouldn't put serial number up, is in case the gun isnt registered....easier way to forge paperwork then....which of course only half of my guns are registered, none of them being mosins.

But wouldn't registration involve the number that is etched in by the importer? Being that a lot of the original serial numbers are mismatched anyways? Just a thought.

yeah....unless u have a matching numbers gun like mine....thats never seen a re-arsenal, might i add....it's still the P.O.S. it was when it left the FFL, they dont send their arms off for rearsenaling, they just stick them up for storage....or sell em....and, they dont wear their weapons out either....they have a certain number of years depending on the type of action(bolt, semi, full)...after the number of years have passed, they inspect them, if they are worn more than 30%, they are sold(or given away in this case), or they are put in storage. Mine was given to the soldier(Capt. J.R. Parker) who it had originally been issued to. So yeah, i know the history of it, mostly, but how it ended up in his attic with bolt missing, i have no clue....he's too dead to respond to my questions.

.
also....he actually gave us the new serial number on the gun....forgot to blank out a couple spots....prolly shouldnt have written this

.
.
.
actually, if you dont have matching numbers, i believe they go by the receiver stamp....like when you build a hotrod from scratch, they usually go by the frame number, or frame/engine numbers are both used.

.
also, those numbers are matching on his cuz they're the new numbers stamped by importer....see where they were dot-penciled into receiver?

i might just blue out the laser penciling on my Mosin to prevent that problem and reengrave the serial # on the bottom of the reciever.

Course with the PE mount I have on it, the serial number got drilled thru, so its half gone already.

haha....sounds like it's already taken care of....speaking of numbers, i dunno if anyone remembers the old army broadcasting station, the guy used to say the following: BR 549....well, they had an old '54 Ford Customline car outside that was army green with the stars and all the 'dull' markings like a military car, that had the numbers 'BR 549' on the fenders....that car was just auctioned from a museum a while back. think it sold for like $89,000. wish mine was worth that
