Finally got to the range

My better half was off from work Friday and I finally got to go to the rifle range. I took my son's "new" M91/30 he got for christmas, to zero the scope.

In attempting to do the static boresight, (bolt out looking at a 25 yard target through the bore) I could not get the scope to adjust down to the bullseye.

Hmm? Bad scope?

So I took the scope off of my M91/30 and put it on his M91/30. Same result.

So I put his scope on my M91/30 and it worked fine. I fired a few rounds, then packed up and headed to the gunshop, where I had the mount installed. This same gunsmith has mounted all my Mosin-Nagant mounts with no problems, so I know he knows what he is doing.

After looking the rifle and mount over, he used a strait edge and showed me that the barrell and receiver were not properly squared up. He then took the rifle back to his work area and I heard the sound of grinding.

He ground the receiver, under the mount, to make it square, so now the scope and mount are properly aligned with the bore.

Anyone else run into this problem?

Shure, ya gota Remember Mosins are like tomatoes. There will be variations.
They have made millions and millions of these rifles,
over many many decades, at many different factorys in several different countrys.
Take your son's mosin back and shoot it and give us a range report.
What is most important, is how does it shoot.

I took the scope and rings off my 8mm Mauser and put them on his M91/30, while still trying to isolate the problem, and with that scope and rings, It would zero prior to the "adjustment" by the gunsmith. The rings are taller than the rings on either M91/30, but it worked.

I fired 5 rounds at 100 yards and got a 2 inch group. Now that my son's scope is mounted I will have to return to the range to zero it. I will let you know how it turns out.

That is interesting

Makes me wonder whether the top of the receiver was off, or the barrel was threaded into the receiver off-kilter and everything is off. I suppose it doesn't matter, as long as it feeds.

I'm not much of a hand with a camera, so there probably won't be any pics. The rifle functions well. Chambers and ejects as advertised.
