I paid $100 even, plus shipping. They were $90 via SOG, but they are backordered. I got to see some good pictures of this one with full description from the previous owner prior to purchasing, so I picked it up. I still kick myself for not picking up one at the last gun show, but I still paid about the same price in the end.

Yeah, since it is a 1942 model, it has the original stock without the cutout for the bayonet. That was one of the things that attracted me to it. All matching serial #'s, too. It came with the sling, whereas the others I looked at did not, so the added value made it more attractive, as well.

Thanks, guys.

I still have one on backorder with SOG. It will be interesting, since they have my credit card still holding the order. Since being placed on backorder, my credit card issuer has sent me a new card to replace the soon to expire old one. The card has a totally new number. I have no idea why banks do that, but when SOG gets their stock, they won't be able to charge my card. Oh, well.

Big Five buys their Mosin Nagants from Century Arms. You might try them direct.

Correct me if I'm wrong. But the M38 is like the M44 without the bayonet. I'm I correct? I own so many different Mosins sometimes I have trouble remember. My favorite of all the Mosins is the M39 Finnish, I have 2 of them because I like them so well.

Yes, that is true. It is basically the M44 without a bayonet. However, early M38's do not have the M44 stock. The Russians figured that they needed the bayonet for close quarters combat and added the fixed bayonet for the M44 to the carbine platform.

Mine has a carbine stock not an M44 stock. You know Sometimes
I think that these newer rifles coming over here are cobbled together by people like the Russian mob. I mean since the fall of Communism in all but China. Who is running things like these factories? I'm not sure we know what is being brought over here. The other thought I had was counterfeit parts being made, and assembled. Just a thought. I don't buy any guns and haven't for many years now. My ole man was a FFL dealer and he showed me the writing on the wall 30 years ago. Don't get me wrong I shoot and enjoy playing with guns, I just refuse to buy anything these days including ammo.

Late I know but Big 5 gets there relics from Century Arms and with your own C&R type 03 lic you can as well. They are sadly out of the M38's, as I still want another. I thinK Tallyman had said this already. Sorry for butting in I am new to posting and am not sure if there are rules for adding my own.

Century didn't have any on their site when I have looked on numerous occasions. They are also often high in some of their pricing, as well. It is unfortunate, but at least I got one I am happy with.

Take heart.

There are still some around.

Mosin-Nagant M-38

But they do seem to be getting scarce.

Is the M-38 the choice one to buy ??? Would someone take the time to explain to the one's that don't know anything about these rifles.

It seems a lot of Gun and Game members own one, I had heard the name but thats all.

Thanks you... Mike

I kicked myself for not doing the same thing months ago, hence the post. Yup, sometimes the impulse is the right thing to do.

Mike, it is all about personal preference. Some love the carbine rifle but hate the M44 bayonet. The M44 came out after the Russian army decided that the M38 was a great rifle but they wanted a bayonet for close combat.

The choice M38 rifles have no cut out for the bayonet, meaning that they are older, prior to the M44 innovation and do not have the same stock. Some love carbines, others love full length rifles. I love the balance of the 91/30 more so than the M44, but I personally like carbines, so I searched for the M38.
