| Question Re: 91 Mosin Russian Revolution Era Rifle
Hello to All, I have recently picked up two 1916 dated M91 Mosin Nagant long rifles, in original configuration (sights graduated in arshins, long barrels, etc.). One thing both rifles have in common- the Imperial arms of the tsar has been defaced (ground off) on both of these guns. One of them has had several other markings defaced by peening. Was this something that was commonly done by the revolutionary forces, or perhaps by the later Red Army? Anyone have any more information on this? Thanks in advance for your time, Sgt. It was pretty standard procedure for the USSR to wipe the Imperial Crest off their weapons, and most of the older Mosins you find will have had it done. I don't know about peening other marks off; I haven't seen that before. One of my M91's still has a beautiful Imperial Crest on it. But that's because it was American-made by New England Westinghouse, and never delivered.
