First 100yd Shots - How Is This?

Hi,

I tried my M44 at 100yds today.

The first target had five shots fired at it and I only it hit twice, so I didn't include it here. I didn't know yet where it hit at that range.

The second target was better.

A Dunham's opened in my town last Friday, and they got some Barnaul JSP in. Still waiting on the Wolf. I picked up a box of 203gr JSP for coyote and needed to sight it in.

I started out by warming myself up with some Brown Bear. As an aside, the Brown Bear and Barnaul cases have the same markings. I shot mostly low. I switched to 148gr Czech and shot mostly high. Good groups though.

The first five Barnaul hit the target - where, I'm not sure, because I had forgotten to mark the rounds already fired.

So, five more went downrange.

If I lollipopped the X-ring, I hit the target. If not, the bullet holes congregated low. This is how I like it for coyote hunting. It's a bit more precise IMO.

I was also breaking in a new range - shooting through some brush I couldn't get to in order to clear, as the work being done to this property has effectively closed my other 100yd range.

I shot standing, 100yds, no support. I feel I did well enough.

The numbered holes are the final five Barnaul rounds. The fifth one, with a "?" after it, is one I'm not sure about. It may have already been there, or it could have struck another bullet hole. I thought I had a flyer, but could have been mistaken. In short, I just don't know about that fifth round. I am sure about the other four.

I find it curious that my 100yd groups really aren't much worse than my 50yd groups. Maybe it's because the target looks so much smaller at that range?

Any criticism would be appreciated. I feel I did well, and while I could probably do better prone, I feel better about using this rifle mainly for quick shots while standing. I have a sharpshooter 91/30 project planned for later on, especially since Dunham's has a bunch of them.

I doubt I'd shoot further than 100yds - that's the distance at which my berm is located, and the berm marks the end of the property.

Other than using a sling - my old one had a piece of leather holding the buckle give way - are there any other tips that you can give me, other than to practice?

Thanks,

Josh <><

You're in the money! To get tighter you need to reload and kiss each round!

That's not bad considering the sights and shooting unsupported. I would suggest lightening the trigger and try shooting off a rest. FWIW, S&B makes a match load with a Sierra 174 gr. hpbt bullet that shoots great in mine.

My First 3 Rounds At 100 Yards From A $50 M-n I Could Easily Cover With A Dime. Two Of The Rounds Were Virtually In The Same Hole. This Was A 31 Inch Barrel With Open Sights. The Guy Next To Me Had A 3 Inch Group With A Stainless Weatherby And Leupold Scope. I Asked Him How Many M-n's He Could Have Bought For What He Paid For His Rig.

The Ammo Was The Steel Core Sniper Ammo With Red Primer And Red Ring Around The Crimp.

+2 on the S&B.

My Mosins really love the stuff. Yeah it's relatively expensive ammo compared to something like standard fare cheapo Wolf ammo , but then again the thrill factor with each shot is just that much better too!

Looks about what I got last time I tried my 44.
At least you have the group/pattern centered on the target, mine's still pretty far off.
