The Hex receivers are the Oldest and considered Tougher than round ones, which have less Appeal to some Collecters. Hex Receivers look Good !

I will grab any Hex that is Reasonbly Priced, and research the markings, stampings, etc. Different Arsenals, years, Inspectors marks, which all add up to The History of that Rifle. There are some real Gems still waiting to be found out there. I have round ones too, I just like the Hex .

Check it out!

The hex receivers were only built from 1891 to, I believe, late '37 or early '38 and were never produced at the frantic pace that the round receivers were after the onset of WW 2. Some people swear that the hex receivers are stiffer and more accurate than the round ones, but I can't tell much difference in groups.

If you pull the stock off, you will usually find the original year of manufacture stamed on the bottom of the rear tang. My 1946 SAKO M-39 was built on a 1915 receiver.

I just passed one up because the non hex was 20 bucks cheaper. I bought it to shoot and am not worried a bit about collector value.

It's predominantly a matter of appeal, and they are harder to find.

They have a quainter appearance. My Hex M91/30 is tighter shooting than my round-receiver Mosins. It's dated 1930.
I also have the Sestroyetsk-built M891 dated 1916.
Both are quite good shooters.
On the other hand, my 1942-dated Finn M39 has an 1895-dated hex receiver - and it shoots like a .410 shotgun.

So I have three Hex-receivered Mosins.

The Hex receiver also gives a nice flat surface for drilling and tapping for scope mounting. I have two (mine & Her's) and both have the Advanced Tech. scope mounts and bolt handle mod.

One day I will weld-close the bridge and move bolt handle behind the bridge to be able to use top-mount scope set up. Hex receiver makes this work more feasible. For this reason I prefer hex receiver.
