Has anyone tried...

Has anyone ever tried putting a red dot sight on a Mosin? I have an M44 and a red dot but it looks to me like the sight would be WAY to high to use if you used a scout mount. I would like to make a short range heavy brush gun for hogs. To me it seems the only thing to do would be to build up the stock similar to a Monte Carlo only much higher. Thanks for any input. David

Hey David, I hunt hogs with mine quite a bit, but I've never tried a red-dot. I use a 2x20 pistol scope on a B-Square mount with pretty good results. We usually find them in the field at night, so I hold the spotlight in my left hand with my thumb extended under the forend and this gives plenty of light transmission to see through the scope. I also bought a cheap laser to try but I haven't played with it much yet.

had a reddot on mine it worked ok for a while but i went the cheaper route and it did not hold up to the recoil. so now mine is sporting a 2x leupold pistol scope i like that a lot better.

You need a comb riser. They sell em cheap and expensive. 1/2" to 5/8" rise. Cordura Nylon, neoprene, plastic, and MILSURPSPEC cowhide leaher. That's your answer for a good stock weld!

I've seen a comb kit at Cabelas that was cheap and adjustable for height. I believe the brand was Bear Creek, Bear Tooth, something like that.

Hey thanks for the input. Toolman how would you mount the laser? I checked with TPWD about hunting with the laser and he told me that they were fine for non-protected animals but don't have one on a gun if you have a deer (or any protected animal) in the truck. I looked at the Beartooth kit and read the reviews and believe I will pass on it. Most of the reviews said it moved after just a few shots. I think I will either go with a pistol scope or a laser. Thanks again. David

Hey David, I'm thinking of fabricating a Weaver-type mount that attaches to the barrel via a barrel clamp like some shotgun light mounts. I can remove the scope and mount it on top, but I think I'd like it better underneath the barrel.

Marion57, My open sights seem to have some kind of fuzzy gunk growing on them. It has spread to all of my guns so it must be contagious. I have tried several different cleaners but nothing seems to work. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks again, David

Marion57 I was only kidding it is my eyes that have the fuzzy edges on everything. They are not as good as they once were. About 20 years ago I had a US M1917 that I could get .75 inch 5 shot groups at 100 yards with open sights. Nowdays when I put the gun up and look at the target everything is so fuzzy I can't hardly tell what I am doing. Thanks David
