| Senior Member | M91/30 vs. M-44 Please offer opinions: Which is better. I'm going to get one of these but was wondering if one is better than the other. I like the M91/30's looks better but is it more accurate, easy to care for, etc. Also, does it shoot good without the bayonet? Do they both use the same ammo or does one take 7.62x54 and the other 7.62x54R. Does the two ammos perform the same? Thanks! ![]() PS. I called Classic Arms Inc. and got throught with 2 rings! I ask one question about shipping but forgot to ask these. No answer 2nd try. |

| Senior Member | Neither is "better"... it's what you prefer. You will probably get a bit more accuracy out of a similar 91/30 over an m44, due to the longer barrel. The 91/30 shoots fine without the bayonet. The m44 was sighted in with the bayonet extended. Both are equally easy to care for. Just make sure to rinse with water (preferably hot and/or soapy and/or with ammonia) at the range to get out any corrosive salts if you're using corrosive ammo (which most 7.62x54R is, unless it specifically states it's non-corrosive). They are not two different rounds, the R indicates that it is a "rimmed" round. If you saw someone type 7.62x54, it means they got lazy and didn't add the R on the end. Also, 7.62x53R is the same as 7.62x54R, just made by a different country for their rifles (Finnish, I believe, but not sure). For more info, also go through all the posts here (many years worth of information archived) and check out http://7.62x54R.net

| Grumpy Old Fart ![]() | JAC hit it spot on! Only difference is length, with the M91/30 generally being more accurate. Gonna punch paper or make meat?

| Member | That is what I did. One is simply not enough! Especially at the price. You must have more than one Mosin! It's the law! So get both and now that the original anxiety has settled, you can start the search for the perfect Mosin. It is sort of like one of those McDonalds contests where you have to check all the pieces to see if you finally got thr right one. Until you own one of each, you will never know. |
