| M44 Newbie! First vintage weapon! Hey guys, First post here. I've always loved hunting, shooting, history, but have never owned a vintage weapon. I stop in the local store from time to time, but have never purchased anything...until yesterday! They had gotten a case of UNISSUED Russian M44's. Mint! at a price I couldn't afford NOT to buy one. So, not really knowing anything much about the gun, I purchased one dated 1944 along with strap, ammo pouch, ammo, cleaning "stuff" and a few other things I don't even know what they are. This is a beautiful weapon. I'll post pictures up later today. Your guys enthusiasm for this gun is apparent and contatgious! Now I've got to learn about this weapon, and the little nuances of it. Thanks and I look forward to posting here. Greg |

| Senior Member | welcome TO G&G first off i hate to bust your bubble but there is no such thing as an unissued mosin/nagant most all of them have been sent to be re-armored that is why their in such good cond. and 1 more thing the m44 was sighted in with the bayo. "fixed" if you shoot it "folded" it will shoot way left.

| You need to be aware that the little brass bottle that came with your gun has two partitions. One marked "W" and one marked "H". The "W" stands for Windex and the "H" stands for Hoppes #9. Just so you know. |

| Senior Member | The Nagant is a fantastic rifle, I have an M-38. You will truly enjoy it. Jus tbe sure to clean it after you shoot, all the ammo for it has corrosive primers.

| Mosins are addictive. I keep dreaming of a M39 but I can't stop buying 91/30s and M44s. Then there is the Swiss k31 and.....

the little teardrop thing is a combo screwdriver and firing pin depth checker/firing pin wrench. the little steel rod and hollow tube with holes in the end are (when assembled correctly) the handle for your cleaning rod. im guessing those were the parts you didnt know what were.

| Welcome to G&G. The guys and gals here will gladly answer your questions. I havent seen any Mosin-Nagant questions(as I recall) that have stumped this bunch. Be careful of the cosmoline, on your rifle! It will cause MOSINITAS, and has no known cure. It's symptoms are undeniabledesire to purchase more Mosins, the ammo for them and all the ascessories that go with them. I surely hope there is a gun safe in your future purchase plans, because they breed! Really, just ask these guys! <G> Nick |

| Congratulations! Happy shooting! One clarification: All the milsurp ammo is corrosive. The commercial stuff (Wolf, Sellier & Bellot), is non-corrosive, but it's $$$$$. |

To expand upon what others have said, yes, surplus ammo is corrosive. I shoot only my own handloads and the occasional Wolf Gold commercial ammo, so that's not a problem for me. Yes, they were sighted in with the bayonet extended. If you prefer to shoot with it folded, just drift the front sight with a tack hammer and a punch, until it shoots straight. As you've already discovered, these guns have a fascinating history, look nice, shoot well and don't cost an arm and a leg. Get'em now while they're still cheap and available. In fact, you're probably ready for a 91/30 right now... | |||
