| Bulgarian Ammo Can
I finally had a chance to open up my first milsurp can of ammo. It's Bulgarian heavy ball from AIM Surplus and comes in a can that put me in mind of an old World War II lifeboat ration can. Tin, with a pull tab and a sealer strip running around the top. Bearing in mind what folks on the forum have had to say about the Russian and Romanian cans, I assembled a tool kit consisting of a pair of needlenose pliers, a hammer, a metal chisel and a pair of vise-grips, ready to do battle with the can.
So you can imagine my astonishment when the Bulgarian can meekly peeled open when I took hold of the pull ring and gave it a slow, steady pull. It took me about 20 seconds to open the can because I eased the sealer strip around the corners. No muss, no fuss, no trouble. Talk about anticlimactic!
Inside the can the paper and string wrap was brittle and crumbled if too much pressure was applied to it - like picking a packet up other than gingerly. I transferred all the ammo to an old US Army ammo can that once held fuzes for artillery shells I'd just bought (it didn't half fill it), and clipped up the 80 or so rounds whose packets crumbled on me.
The ammo is clean as a whistle. I just hope it shoots as good as it looks. But if you want a nice, easy-opening can, the Bulgarian stuff is it on a stick!

i have this same ammo, it does shoot as good as it looks....
what I would like to know is how they got it so neatly square packaged into each little pack and tied so perfectly. I challenge any of you to open one and try to get it back the way it was.

Did you know that Russian infantry, unwrapped those papered rounds, counted them, oiled them, repackaged them, then turned down the paper, and slipped them into their ammo pouches!
