All I did to open mine was use a hammer and flathead screwdriver to open just enough to where I could remove all the boxes inside it, then with the can empty I took a metal saw and cut open the rest of the tin. I like the little can it came in. This was for Romanian Mauser ammo by the way but it's the same type of can.

Went through a lot of replies and nobody mentioned my favorites opening devices.

They are Det Cord, C4 and Thermite. They will open a can right up. Even C-Rats.

Best wishes, Bill

P.S.

For all the schmucks that weren't around for WW2, Spam was a life saver. During the war meat was rationed and I came from a family of 14. If you came from the city you were screwed. While we were walking around skinny and teeth rotting the farm kids were fat dumb and happy. They didn't have to worry about Ration Stamps.

I remember the "BUTTER" we had in those times. It came in a plastic bag with a capsule inside that you broke and and then sqiushed the coloring agent through the bag and it turned a magical yellow color. It was called Oleomargarine.

Hell, it sure beat dry bread.

By the way, I still love a Spam sandwich with Frenchs Mustard.

Best wishes, Bill

I am one of the schmucks that wasn't around for WW2/depression times but have learned enough about the times to understand that you speak truth. My parents came from farm families and no one should think life was easy for them either. I remember them telling us of seining the river for bluegills for supper, scraping the bottom of the corn crib to get enough corn for corn bread and hunting hard for a rabbit for stew. Plus, they always reminded us.....Grandma only gave them one shell for that shotgun so ya better not miss. Sometimes there was nothing to shoot. I wasn't there and I am thankful. But they taught me the value of what we have.

May we never go through that again.

My Dad once went for a period of five weeks with the 60th Regiment in North Africa where they had nothing but Spam and corned beef hash three times a day. According to my mom, one of the few times he ever got really angry with her was the night he came home from work and Mom served him corned beef hash, a family dish she did very well. He threw the pot out the window and snarled at her, "NEVER serve me corned beef hash again as long as you live!" and stomped out. She went to the bedroom and cried. Dad returned with a brand new pot and a bouquet of flowers by way of apology, and told her the story.

She never served him Spam, either. But about once a year, Dad would get a craving for it, buy one can of it, and make us thick Spamwiches with mayonnaise and deli mustard and black pepper. That was when he told me the story of that period of his Army service.

So he did not hate the spam as bad as corned beef.

Must not be Irish.

LhS- This isn't the S, B, and C thread, LOL !! I remember oleo and it was nasty. I've not had spam since I was a child. We had it a lot, and I didn't like it then. But it filled your belly. We ate a lot of game as well, and I was very happy to have it. Being Swedish and Irish we had potatos with everything !! One of my favorites was venison hash with onions.
