Hmmm. Thanks for the explanation Rich! Makes sense now. Not sure where I got the other info but thanks for the clarification. Don't listen to Marion. It was really his fault.

Yerp. One of the rounds in my can of Bulg. Heavy Ball had a split case neck, and the bullet fell out. The powder was cylindrical-shaped like MM said. Looked like tiny pieces of spaghetti.

I have fired almost that much bulgarian and have not a problem. Wish I could say that for my Wolf 7.62x39. Fired 160 rounds and one misfire. Not bad though.

I don't think I am that long winded. I know when to talk and when not to talk and I know what to say sometimes when I want to sound like I know what I am talking about and know when to shut up when I need to shut up and know who to listen to and who not to listen to and I know my ABCs and I can count to 100 backwards and forwards and... ![]() By the way...how do you open one of those spam cans if the ring has broken off?

| Nah, I bought two cans from AIM Surplus, they're probably one of the better sources I imagine. The one round that fell apart looked to be a defective case to begin with, not AIM's fault.

What makes this incident interesting is that I had a heck of a time decapping this ammo, with an RCBS collet type puller, and had to pre-loosen the bullet, to break it free of the crimp. Occasionally I will use the bullets in "clean" hand loads as they are a cheap source, with bullets running $30+ per 100 and Bulgarian running $45 for 300. They are pretty weight consistant and work as well as any non-match grade bullets. Every other MilSurp round I have decapped pulled free with just the RCBS puller. Just an FYI. rondog, An interesting note on all of this is that the AIM ammo comes in a 250 rd can and the one that I have (from J&G) is a 300 round can. Just an observation, but could be different MFR dates and lots. Are your rounds crimped or just seated? |

Certainly there are many different types of ammo cans, but heres one way of how to open one type of ammo can. This here is the Russian light ball I ordered from AIM. It took about 5 days to get here. Enjoy: Step 1: Receive the package, and rejoice. ![]() Step 2: Tear open the package and look for a tool that opens the can. Hey, look! It';s sitting right there on top of my can (even though AIM advertises a free can opener ONLY with the purchase of 2 or more cans, this is the second time they have sent me a free can opener). ![]() Step 3: Use the tool. Prepare for some bloody and skinned knuckles. I suggest work gloves. The opener has the tendency to slip. ![]() Step 4: Work the tool and get the sides open. The most difficult parts are the corners. ![]() Step 5: I leave one snippet of metal connected for easy storage. ![]() Step 6: Behold the glory! ![]() Step 7: Inspect! ![]() -TPM |

I went to the surplus store and bought a couple of US Army .30 cal. ammo cans, then unwrapped all my 54R and dumped 'em into my ammo cans. Filled 'em right up! I figured that's a much better way to store and transport them than the nasty ham cans. Last edited by rondog; 03-22-2008 at 12:28 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost | |
