Make sure the end with the primers is the end you hit.

Yes, you can set off a live ammo round by hitting the end with a hammer.
Been there, done that. Mostly shotgun but a few centerfire rounds too.

(Mythbusters wasn't around back then so yo0u had to find out yourself!)

I had to open three of those bulgarian spam cans earlyer today with sears vicegrips and a ww1 bayonet and a rubber mallet.
