Just ordered a big crate of happiness today... 880 light ball bulgarian, as well as 120 new production 174 and 203, just to see how they shoot. I'll probably try opening it with my nice flat bladed mason's chisel.

I have shot a lot of bulgarian with out a hitch. Both Heavy ball and light ball. If the spam can was in good shape I am surprised you had so much trouble. But, that could just be a bad batch!

Next thing to check is your firing pin. Is it adjusted properly? If you have one of the little teardrop-shaped Mosin tools, there are four notches on one side; the center two are go-no go gauges for firing pin protusion. If yours is adjusted back a little too far, it may not be setting off hard primers.
