Shooting my 91/30 for the first time.

Haha. Any tips on what I should expect? So far I haven't shot anything larger than a .22. In fact, I just shot a gun for the first time today. ^_^' I know to be safe. My dad kinda drilled that into my head. =] But I digress. Anything to the Mosin that I should know?

Pull it into your shoulder, keep your finger of the trigger until you're ready to shoot.
If you forget to pull it into your shoulder.....Tylenol.

You'll be fine. Nothing else then a big .22, same principles apply. Have fun!

Wear good ear\eye protection, hold it tight to your shoulder and prepare to be thumped! In all seriousness, these guns do have a fairly stout recoil which is worse when shooting from the bench. My recommendation is to shoot offhand\standing and do not overdo it the first few times to allow your body to accustom itself to the recoil. After awhile, you get used to it and don't even notice it much. If it hasn't had all of the cosmoline cleaned out of it, be prepared for some weeping\seepage after firing several rounds so carry a towel to wipe it off. They're a hoot to shoot, congrats and welcome to the club!

Thank ya for the tips, toolman. They're very appreciated!

Just as a hypothetical question, what would happen if one didn't wear ear protection?

What??? Speak louder......we can't hear so well since we shot our rifles too many times without ear protection.

As you probably know, the bang from a rifle larger then a .22 is considerable louder. You could and will damage your hearing.

Don't try to be cool.....be safe.

Gotcha! :]

Hehe.

I've heard that these things are pretty darn loud.

I'll be sure to get some ear protection before I fire it. Thank ya. =]

They are loud.
Trust me its well worth it. My father-in-law was in his early 70s when he decided to join us at the range one day. Even so we begged him to wear some ear protection he refused. His argument was that he never use any in Korea so he wouldn't need any now. A few weeks later he bought a hearing aid. A younger person might not even notice the damaging effects right away, but it will show later in life by accelerated hearing loss.
Therefore hearing protection is standard equipment, regardless of the caliber of the gun. Take your gun, grab your ammo, and double check that you have your hearing protection. If you forget them ask someone from the range. They usually have rental "Mickey Mouse Ears" or sell the little plug-in fellows.

Yes, use hearing protection!!!!! I have tinnitus really bad (ringing in the ears) because when I used to have a .357 I was MUCH too cool to use earmuffs. Like the stupid kids you see walking down the street in the winter with a t-shirt and no coat.

If you listen, the 4 days of ringing in your ears is actually a Russian march!

I became a devout hearing protection wearer when I was in high school. I even hunt with ear plugs in. My buddies and I set up a practical pistol course in a set of deep errosion channels. We shot the course a few times each firing 50 rounds per course. At the end of the day I could not hear a thing. My 45 auto in confined place had taken away my hearing. Scrared me so bad I never shot again with out protection. I still have a ringing in my ears and can not hear well with any back ground noise and it will only get worse in years to come.

I agree with above. WEAR HEARING PROTECTION EVEN WITH 22s!

Hearing protection is a must ! I lost a good deal of my hearing while in the military. It's not something you get back. Eyes don't grow back either. Hearing and eye protection are an easy way to stay safe.

Alrighty. ^_^ Eye and Ear protection it is, then.

But what about the gun itself? Is there anything special about it (Besides it being a neat part of history?)? Any nuances at all? Tricks? That sort of thing?

Besides trying differet ammo to see what she likes, I would only say that through lots of shooting, you will learn her trigger and increase your accuarcy.

The case is rimmed so make sure to load the rifle so the rounds feed properly. You want the top rim to be ahead of the lower rim all the way down.

Also, clean the rifle well immediately after firing. Most of the ammo is very corrosive. Clean the bore with Windex and follow with Hoppe's no 9.

Plus, I can not stress enough. Hold that sucker snug against your shoulder. Squeeze the trigger and have fun!

hearing protection

Ferroflame: Sir; and anyone around you should have hearing protection, eye protection.
Don't let the 'baby' brother down. He will not like having a 'ringing' head.
