New 91/30 ex sniper

I was at the Tulsa gun show today checking out 91/30s when I found a private seller had 1 and after a quick check of it I purchased it for 110. A bit higher than I could get one for elsewhere in the show but this one is an ex sniper and the bore is EXCELLENT, easily the best one I looked at today. Its a 43 Izzy, but hey. So tonight I am gonna start stripping and cleaning. The guy stated he never shot it and I figure he is probably being truthful because there is still plenty of cosmo on it, bolt is even sticky a bit with it.

So should I sniperize it or not?

I am also thinking of just stripping the wood, sanding and tung oiling it as its not really a collector or anything. Still undecided here.

If it was once a sniper then it may be calling to go back to it's former glory. Maybe it just got a bad batch of sniper ammo that caused it to fall from grace. You could be called by the Mosin gods to resurect a true diamond long forgotten! I would shoot it first though. If it has potential then there are some things you can do to improve accuracy. Just have fun with it!!! Those rifles cry if they are not shot. Then their tears rust the rest of yur rifles!

Yep I will take her for a spin before I drop the cash on scope and mount. Here are some pics of her. Its in pretty good shape overall. I would just leave the shellac on it but its chipped of in several places so I guess I will just strip it and tung oil it.

The image below is a pic of the bottom of the magazine. What is the deal with that serial number that is struck out and the new one stamped in?

looks like when they took it off the sniper line they also put a new stock on. I Don't see any splice for where the mount would go, unless i just can't see it in the picture. When the rifle was rearsenaled they original magazine was either not with the rifle or in bad condition, so, most likely, they crossed out the old serial number then stamped the one to match the rifle.

Yep I do believe when they converted the snipers they restocked them too. This one has been restocked so it doesnt have the cutout for the mount.

I was thinking the same thing about the stamp on the mag too.

Oh and those are thumbnail pics so just click them to get the full size photo and then click it again to get the best view.

You may need a bent-handle bolt as well. You might be better off just buying a re-arsenalled "sniper" from SOG or J&G for $350.

On the other hand project rifles are fun.

what im saying about the sniper stock, is that most of them have a peice of wood, im not sure if its glued or what, but put into where the cutout was for the mount. But if you need any help on any of the stuff, pretty much everyone here can give u atleast on thing that will help you out with the rifle.

Ex snipers are called that for a reason. Normally they were refurbed and re-issued to the infantry when there was a need or the rifle lost some of it's accuracy. This would include welding the mount holes closed, restocking or splicing stock to M91/30 configuration, and maybe a new finish. In addition, most most bent-bolt bodies were swapped out. Other parts were sometimes swapped during the refurb as well. So most ex-snipers do not have matching numbers. Most are force matched.

Many of the ex-snipers were decommisioned after the war and then refurbed in the Ukraine. It had nothing to do with "falling from grace". They were hand selected because they were deemend the best shooters out of a lot of at least 500 units which were all test fierd at either the Tula or Izhevsk factory. If you refinsish this rifle it will loose all collectors value. The area where the scope once sat was plugged, redrilling these out and placing a knock of scope will not make it shoot any better. This ex-sniper is capable of shooting a 1.5 inch Moa @ 100 yards. Give a little better respect please.

Hey, it's your gun.
I converted (resnipered) both of mine. They are good shooters.
Got all bases & mounts from accumounts.com.
