Ellsworth, sorry for the late post, but I just installed my ATI stock as well yesterday. Glad to see someone elses experience. Good pics. I may change the sights later, but no scope for me. (I may bastardize this piece of history with plastic, but changing iron sights! Horrors! )

My action rocked in the center like yours, and looking at the forend pic I had the same deal with some space underneath. On mine the barrel looks like it's all the way in, and you can screw everything down, but the rifle will actually rock slightly from front to back if you look carefully.

I thought about trying a padded vise, but first tried gripping the rifle with both hands and pushed together in the center as hard as I could, and sure enough (after applying my enormous strength to it!) the receiver popped down an extra 1/16" or so. Then I tightened both top and bottom screws evenly as tightly as possible. There is a definite difference and the receiver tang fits better now. The ATI stock is good quality IMO. You got a great deal on yours, as SRP is about $70. I was lucky enough to get mine as a B-day present from my son, and he used a coupon at Midway to get it for me for $57.

BTW, for those of you looking for the perfect fitting screwdriver for your Mosin screws, if you like a fixed blade driver, the Brownells #15 in their fixed blade set will do the trick. No slop, no play, no chance on buggering up the heads. You can buy just the one size separately if you like. (I can only speak to the M44 BTW. I have no idea if the tang and floorplate screws on other models are different...)
