New guy - where to buy?

Hi Folks,
Ok, after looking around here, I've decided I've to to have one of these 91/30's. Ya'll can't have all the fun! My question is, since I'll probably have to buy online, is there a dealer that you guys have had good experience with? I do see them occasionally at gun shows, but I'm not sure that I know enough about them to get a good one. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jeff

have you checked out any local gunshops, their usually cheaper that way.
you could try GunBroker.com Online Gun Auction they have a lot of them.
welcome to G&G i'll have to warn you about mosinitis. it a dreaded disease that
you contact after you buy your first mosin/nagant rifle, and its incureable.

I have delt with AIM, J&G, and recently SOG. All are well known on this board.

Be aware that to order rifles/pistols you need to have a Federal Firearms License (in the case of Mosin Nagants an 03-FFL is required) or prearrange to have the rifle shipped to an 01-FFL dealer. You can also buy directly from most Big 5 stores if they are in your area.

You're gonna love shooting these rifles. Beware, that they are habit forming (that's a good thing).

This is the best group of MN owners you will run accross, and welcome to G&G

Another sports store that carries them is Duhnam's and Gander Mountain has them sometimes.

Wow, thanks for all the information! I am located in Nashville TN. I've looked in several gun shops and no luck. There's a gun show this weekend, so I'll be looking around there. I have a dealer close to home that will do the transfer, but I did send off for a CandR app, just in case these are addictive as they seem to be!
Thanks again,
Jeff

You should find one there...but be in line when the doors open if you can.

Or just before the doors open stand close by the head of the line and when the doors do open yell real loud, "Hey there's Ted Kennedy and he says he's got a court order to stop the gun show." Point to the end of the line. The die hards will be in the front of the line and at the mere mention of Ted Kennedy stepping on their 2nd admendment rights will blow a gasket and storm out of line to give Ted a piece of their mind.

In the massive confusion zip in first.

Or say "There's Hillary in a bikini". While they are throwing up move towards the front of the line.

tnjeff, welcome to the forum.

I'd suggest giving Classic Arms in North Carolina a call. They have Mosin Nagant 91/30s ranging from about $70 to about $100, and they throw in an accessory kit as part of the deal. They also have ammo. You might want to order a couple of hundred rounds to get acquainted with your new Russian girl, but if you read the Mosin thread you'll find better ammo deals.

Be prepared to deal with a rifle in the original cosmoline. I suggest you buy a gallon of mineral spirits, some brass bristle 'toothbrushes' and a funnel. Also, read back down the Mosin forum; there are a couple of good threads on cleaning one up there. "Cosmoline: It's not just for breakfast anymore!"

You may also want to consider a lace-on or velco-shut buttpad. The Mosin has recoil that is substantial, but a buttpad will reduce it by quite a lot.

They're fun to shoot, and not terribly expensive to shoot if you buy ammo in bulk; and you may get a kick out of the thread on How To Open An Ammo Can.

And again, welcome to the forum.

tnjeff, I agree about the buttpad. I put a slip on limbsaver butt pad on my 91/30 and found it quite comfortable and fun to shoot even from a bench. I was also surprised how well one of them shot! Just remember that the surplus ammo is corrosive so bring cleaning equipment to the range. A bottle of Windex and some WD 40 are a must have in my range box. Spray the barrel out with Windex, run a patch down the barrel to dry it. Spray it out with WD 40 then clean it good with Hoppe's No.9. Washing it out with soap and hot water is also a good way.

Welcome to the Mosin club. You will truly enjoy the rifle. I had my doubts at first but once I gave it a try I fell into Mosinitis. I now own 8 and am looking at a 9th. Price is right.

Tex- If you buy 'em all, you gotta share!

Jeff- If you find one at the Gunshow, look for matching serial #'s on the bolt, magazine floorplate, and butt plate. Not necessarily bad if they don't match. Just nicer if they do.
