Figure it's about time to answer the roll call with another new addition today.
It all started back in July with a Ukranian refurb M91/30 (1942 Tula/Izzy mix) It feels a hell of a lot lighter than it should, and kicks more than an M38, but still shoots pretty nice. Only complaint is after putting about 25 rounds through it, it starts to have issues ejecting the cartridge and picking up a new one, and it needs the trademark 2x4 to cycle the bolt.
August saw an M38 in my hands. 1942, all Izzy, someone refinished the stock because the shelack is gone and it was sanded and feels like it was just sealed, but it's smooth as a baby's butt. Bolt gets a little sticky, but you don't need a 2x4, and don't need to hit it to cycle it. It also feels a lot heaver than my M91/30.
Today, in my quest to buy all the enbloc clips in the city, I stumbled across two M44's. One was trashed, the other was a 1948 Izzy, every stamp on the barrel/stock/receiver is plain as day, the bolt... my god... it's like buttred silk it's so smooth. Turns out it was never issued and it was immediately put on lay-a-way (stupid rent payday ) The only real defect on it is a spot on the stock where another rifle rubbed against it.
Would have had a 91/30 sniper if I had 400$, but I'd just bought an M1 Garand, when it was in the store
So,
M91/30
M38
M44
I know, I know, it's only just begun.

I made a trip Sunday to Texarkana, Tex. and one of the stores I visited was Gander Mountain.
I went straight to the firearms section and what did I find ? I found about 15 Mosin Nagant M-44 Russian rifle's with all but one haveing matching numbers.
Most were in very good to excellent condition too !
As I inspected everyone of them I found one with perfect metal but what concerned me about this one paticular rifle is how easy it was to bump the bolt with the palm of your hand and it would pop up and slide back with know resistance what so ever.
It really wasn't loose but it was just to easy to open and that's why I didn't buy it.
Though every one of the rifle's were 99 dollars I forced myself to move on after studying every one of them.
Though I didn't bother looking at what i'll call the 91/30's they only had 2 of them and they had a look of being old.
But in good shape.
I was afraid if I had bought the M-44 I liked most, the bolt would fly open when shot.
In comparison to my 91/30 I recently bought, when you raise the bolt handle on it has some resistance, but once opened is butter smooth to operate.
Can anyone comment on the M-44 I left behind ? Thanks...A.H

It might have been the bolt was assembled improperly and not enough tension applied to the firing pin spring.
I'd also like to point out that we are nearing 1,000 posts on your original idea AH !!

Who knows? I'm going up to my brother's house in Milwaukee for Thanksgiving. He has a Dunhams by his house. I just could come home with another!

They have a fair amount of m38. m44s, and of course 91/30s. I have not perused their stocks in a couple weeks so there may be a nice find there! Also, there is one on blue mound. Not a lot of rifles there but a few. The next best one besides the one on 108th is on Packard lane in Cudahy. How long are you planning to stay in town and when are you coming?
