Nice job - is that a walnut stain?

I had four but put two up for sale. I have a former sniper that really shoots - a 91/30. I also have a model 59 that shoots well. The other was a M44 - shot okay but I can't stand that permanent bayonet. I had a sporterized import by bannerman - a former dragoon - but it shot all over the paper.

I do not currently own one but have been considering one for some time now. I was wondering if anyone can suggest a good "starter" model, as I have seen numerous Mosins at gun shows in the area. Any suggestions or additional info would be greatly appreciated.

It's hard to beat one of the original 91/30s for a starter rifle. They can still be had here and there for under $150, and in some cases, under $100.

The M44 carbines are short and more handy, but tend to be more expensive, are zeroed with the bayonet extended (either re-zero or, heck, shoot with the pig-sticker extended), and are more likely to be counter-bored, if you care about that. The M38, 91/38 and 91/59 carbines are a lot harder to find and as such will probably be over-priced at a gun show.

If the extra cost is not a factor, the Finn-built models would be a great place to start, but they start around $250. They have a better fit and finish and tend to be more accurate.

Thanks a bunch, there's a gun show in my area next month and they usually have a good supply of them there, I'll have to check them out.

Thanks.

It's a custom stain that we use on our furniture and is not available in a store. It is what we call Cherry Oak.

Thumbs up

I bought a 1929 91/30 with a laminated stock this week. I'm not really fond of laminated wood stocks but the machining on the metal is very smooth and the bolt head looks as if it's never been fired since refurb. I also have a Tika barreled Finnish M91 that appears to have the original Finnish finish on the stock that will be here Monday and a 1928 Tula that will be here by the end of next week.
