the local gunstore

dropped by after not being in there for years. never hit it off with the owner. he had a nice 1953 hungarian m44 there for $125 with what he said was the original leather sling. think i'll save up some spare cash for it. i picked up a couple 20 round packs of "mystery" bullets. one was 1970 bulgarian, steel case, steel core, heavy. the other's got me confused. it's either 1989 albanian with the year over the country code or 1968 on the bottom and a backwards three for a country code. it's brass cased and has a small primer. five of the twenty rounds were dented above the shoulder. seems to me i saw a thread about the backwards three somewhere but i can't remember (that went right before my eyesight)

it was like $7.50 for a twenty pack. i know that's obscene, i just want to get a few different kinds of rounds to see what my gun likes. problem is, everything i've come across so far is heavy. any idea what the albanian bullet weight is? maybe i should pull one and get the triple beam scale out.

Should be around 150gr. from memory as I measured the ones I decaped because they looked so bad.

Next time check the Bulgarian heavy ball for $45+Shipping for 300 rounds. Good brass cased ammo, but still corrosive.

I am going to put up a sticky on this, but... 3/86 is albanian steel core, light ball, with a bullet diamete of .311 I believe.

Yeah, It is fun to try out different ammo. Most of the Albanian I've found (mainly at gunshows for $4 a bag of 20) looks like it was dug out of a corn field. I have come to like both Bulgarian and Czech heavy ball (although most of the time I shoot hand loaded). Both very consistant and accurate. Both mic out at .311 and a very good ogive length of 2.45" +-.05.

...and the Hungarian M44, where else can you buy one? $125 is probably not a bad price. I Still regret selling my 1953 Romanian.

If the numbers match on receiver, bolt, magazine floor plate and butt plate then snap that puppy up quick! If mismatched then it is still a good deal on a good shooter. I have one I paid 90 for but that was a fluke.

Matching Hungarian M44s have a rarity scale of 4. Would be a good deal for 125. Maybe you could get him lower or throw in some ammo.

First of all congrats on your new rifle .. Forced matched is kinda the wrong term.. what they do is scrub the numbers on bolts and restamp them not all but most are that way today!!Mosin bolts are and can be pretty interchangable as most on here will tell you.. So I would never worry too much about matching numbers ( or forced matched) as truth be told most are "force matched"

I would agree. I would also bet most of what we are seeing now started out as a barreled receiver..

thx for the correction, marion. i'm just glad to find one local that has some charact.r to it and hasn't been scrubbed of all it's history like my izzy with the squeaky clean stock, obviously sanded out and remarked bolt and lined out mag. it does have a tiny import mark on the barrel by the front sight but other than that, it looks like it was just taken from the hands of a hungarian soldier.
