Adjusting sight.

When I go to shoot I know I want to do my shooting with the bayo in. I have read that this will cause the rifle to shoot a little to the left and high, someone told me that I need to bring a brass punch with me to adjust the front sight, the front sight is dove tailed into place and my question is what am I doing??? Am I hitting the bottom of the sight sliding it over to left ot right? I dont want to hit the wrong spot and screw something up.

THIS IS A QUOTE FROM A BETTER SHOOTER THAN I. YOU DON'T EVEN WANT TO SEE MY TARGETS. oops. caplock..
"you drift the front sight left or rightin it's dovetail. Looking through the sights, you would drift the sight to the right to move the strike of the round left, and vice versa. You will need a punch of appropriate size, and a brass hammer."
i think it was swedesteve that i stole that from.

Correctamundo! Remember it doesn't take much to move your POI a LOT! Do you have a witness mark on your sight?

it's a mark made when you want to be able to see if two parts have moved. like a little line that no longer is connected when the sight gets tapped one way or the other. sometimes dots are used as well. i've never looked at my m44's mark so i don't know what it has.

oh yeah, sometimes it can be a dab of paint too but not on the mosin.

Sometmes the front sight is reassembled backwards, so you may have a line on both sides.

Great info here. Some of mine have three witness marks.

Do the punches need to be brass as well?

whoah! glad you brought that up! i should have looked closer at what i was quoting. yeah, if you're using anything to move the front sight it should be brass. if not, you'll have some odd new "witness marks". if you're planning to put new marks to check if it ever moves, then a steel punch gets the nod.
good call there, tex.

^+1 Marion! You can use a plastic punch to drift your sight as well. It works best to have the barrel/sight supported. Normally, the first time you move it, it will take brass.

Brass what there Steve? Brass B's? Too cold for those down here. I prefer preheated 440c steel with a rockwell hardness of 72
