Ammo Run to J & G Sales

I took a drive to Prescott, Arizona yesterday, and picked up two 300-rd cans of Bulgarian brass-cased heavy ball 7.62x54. I paid $42.30 a can.

Of course, by the time you add in the gas 160 miles each way, plus a beer there, and a beer and burritos on the way back, I'd have been money ahead to have it shipped instead. But then I wouldn't have had the scenic drive up Yarnell Hill and US hwy 89 for the first time in years.

I also stopped at High Country guns on the way out of town. They're well-stocked, but they deal almost exclusively in modern guns; the only milsurps or used they have are what they've taken in trade. On one little floor rack I found a New England Westinghouse m91 that had been bubba'd, but it was rather nicely done. The barrel was cut down to about M38 length, and it was properly crowned. It also had a birch stock instead of American walnut. The stock was cut off where the rear barrel band used to be, but had been carefully re-shaped to look like it came that way.

I tried explaining to the old boy working there what they had, but he was totally uninterested; he smiled and nodded, and totally tuned out what I was saying. It was marked as a Mosin Begant, and they wanted $249.00 for it.

But you had fun! That is what counts.

I like that ammo. It shoots very well in my rifles.

Troy, Had you waited another week a few of the local valley (Of The Sun) Mosin/SKS/Mauser owners are making an Ammo run up to J&G as well. A great store. Wish they had one down here in the Phoenix area. They come down for the gun show, but generally bring their B stock, and nowhere near the variety of the store. I want to check out the newly advertised 1944 M44 Tula's as well (if they still have some left).

If you are still in Southern CA then you must be right on The River, and head up I-10 to 60 and 89. Nice drive. Do you get a break on sales tax?

If we start out early and avoid the fiasco of I-17 before Anthem we can hit Prescott in about 2 hours.

Maybe we'll bump into you up there one of these days.

Incidentally you should have told him that the Mosin-Begant must be a knock-off.

So you spent a little more cash T2K. I say well worth it in the end. The ammo looks to be in great condition. You got to take a road trip, very few do or get to do these days and see the sights, unless they're a salesman or a trucker.

So did you buy that rifle? lol, No, I know you didn't. To bad you didn't have a camera with you. would've been nice to see what you described.

Sounds good to me; I don't mind a little company on the road. But from where you are, it might be a lot closer to go directly there, instead of heading down to the desert and looping back up to Prescott.

Are you in the Santa Barbara area, or am I confusing your location with someone else's?

Unfortunately I'm bound by my schedule, Geo. I work a four-week cycle, switching from days to nights, and normally go home on my days off. But every fourth Thursday I get off at 7:00 AM, and go back to work at 7:00 AM Saturday. So I stay here that day and a half, and it's the only reasonable shot I have at making it into Arizona without a special trip.

Nope; no break on sales tax. I forgot that; it brought the two cans to ninety-nine bucks and change.

Dang, Marion. I thought it was just mis-tagged. You think I ought to run back and get it?

Your system has to be out of whack T2K, always switching day to nights and nights to days like that? Or have you done it for so long now, your use to it?

I've learned coping mechanisms, Glock, but I don't think your system ever really adjusts. It's probably shaving a little time off my life, in the long run.

On the plus side, I get three days, one day, three days, and seven days off every four weeks. I only work fourteen days total out of every twenty eight. So it makes working away from home a little more reasonable; the wife sees more of me than she did when I was working forty hours a week from home.

I be lookin forward to that in about 5 years.

Right now they are paying me pretty well, I get to travel internationally, and life is good (probably temporary uphoria) so I just can't turn down the $$$.

The insurance came in handy recently as well.

To tell the truth, tex, it doesn't matter; she stays mad at me about half the time regardless. But after twenty years I'm used to it.

The last time I was working here, her excuse for being mad all the time was that I was working away from home. So I transferred home for three years, and blew that theory all to hell...

It's a good thing I'm fond of the little spitfire, or I'd probably strangle her.

89 A is the best way up to J&G from Phoenix, expecially if you live on the west side.

I bought two MNs from them a few months ago at the gun show here but a friend wanted one so we took the wives with us and made the trek up the mountain.

I picked up a nice ex-sniper and my friend bought two new MNs. Definately worth the trip. Also good for the ammo prices.

I tried to go a few times when I was pulling piggybacks but could never get a satisfactory route from anyone @ J&G, and I wasn't about to drag three or four $75k-$150k trucks into anywhere that I may not be able to get back out of. Sounds like a fun trip tho....

Do not take a truck up 89A to Prescott. I-17 to AZ69 is the truck route and the easiest way to get there. Also J&G gets truckloads of stuff all the time and it is pretty accessable.

I'm planning a run up there in the next few weeks.
