Yup, and they bastardized the original German name "Godfrey" that means "God-peace" to get Geoffrey which was bastardized by the Yanks (us Americans) to get Jeffrey and all the other spellings.

What I say to people that ask why it's spelled that way, I say "How do you spell and pronounce George?"

The Carbines are a lot more fun... fire and thunder.
Welcome to the site. This is a great bunch of knowlegable collectors (main knowlege from interacting on this board).
As far as spousal abuse over Mosinitus... as posted earlier: Count the pairs of her shoes, or other overdone clothing articles, in the closet (or elswhere). If the shoes cost more than $35 a pair (very likely) then that allows the purchase of one MN for each 2 to 3 pairs of shoes.
In my case that allows pretty much unlimited lifetime purchases. Be careful when using this tactic. Try to use it only in an emergency.
My wife hates guns, so it took a while (several years) but now I have 5 rifles and an M38 and Finn M39 on the way (I think). I keep them trigger locked in zippered cases so they all look the same, but I'm about to buy a gun safe... wifes suggestion

Jeff, assuming you have stripped your rifle, do those marks on the receiver look anything like the lateral lines or ribs on the barrel when the hand guard is off of it? The 91/30 that I am getting has those lines. If not, has anyone else seen anything like this before?

Pretty common. Polishing the outside was not a priority during the war years.

Marion57 you look skinny compared to me. I just want to remark on cleaning around wives. Mine gave me hell for cleaning black powder in the bath tub I chipped the enamel and she said it smelled. I finally sold all my black powder and only have cartridge guns now. so I feel your pain.

According to my looking-up-powers, there were 1,873,391 m91/30's made in 1941, split about evenly between tula and izhevsk. Izhevsk had 891,180 attributed to them from that...about half.

Things really geared up in 42 with over 3 million manufactured total, and then back down to 1.8 mill again in 44.

So you are in full swing with that 1941, yes

Not sure if I am thinking in the correct way or not but when I see those marks on the outside, especially on the receiver it tells me that the rifle has not been polished much when rearsenaled. The ones I have seen with those lines have not been counter bored and the bore looks better than those around the same era that do not have those marks.

Actually, I haven't stripped it yet. This weekend I hope. Got some ammo coming so it'll have to be soon.

I've been wondering about this. I don't think mine has been counter bored, but I'll do the "bullet test" when my ammunition arrives. Since I've had it and been studying on it, I'm not sure it's been refurbished at all. I assume that it has but it makes me wonder exactly what they did in the way of refurbishing. I mean some of the finish is cracked and checked and the handguard is almost black for most of it's length. So I don't know.

mine was obvious. you could see sanding marks under the shellac, which was in too nice of shape to have been reissued. the numbers on the bolt and buttplate were sanded off and re-struck and the mag number was lined out. that and a 99% blueing were dead give-aways. oh yeah. counterbored as well.
now the 53 hungarian i got is a different story. looks fresh from a soldiers hands. got 60% blue, numbers match and battle scars all over the stock! it's got personality!
