M39 range report

I shot my Sako m39 today. I find that I could hardly see the dang target at 50 yards with iron sights and those small bullseye targets. But, I was impressed with the last group. I found it liked the heavy ball better than the light ball. Light ball shot MOPP. This group was with heavy ball and iron sights. The 5 shots in the rings are the group I last shot. Shot rapidly. From a solid rest.

Also got to shoot one of my M44s. Shot more of a pattern than a group. Shot that before the M39 and just plain couldn't see the target. One of my shooting buddies shot it as well and did much better. Put two shots touching and the next three high and to the left. I am going to bring larger darker red targets next time. Those small 6" bulls are a bear to see.

Not too shabby... for something like hunting, that's minute-of-dead. Good shootin'!

Functioned like a champ! Smooth as silk and once the eyes got accustomed to the sights shot pretty well. Like I said I was using 6" bullseye targets at 50 yards. That light orange color is only 2" across. I could barely see it. I am sure when I get a target I can see it will do better.

The Yugo sks gave me some trouble though. I slapped a round into the mag and the bolt slammed shut. "Hmm that is interesting", I thought. "Oh well, I guess I will shoot this round and then load more." CLick, nothing. I waited a while then opened the breach. No round. I looked into the magazine. I could see the follower but no round. I searched the bench and the ground. Never could find a round. Oh well. I loaded more and fired off another box or two of ammo. Then before I left I unhinged the floorplate of the SKS. There was the round. UNDER the magazine follower! Never dreamed that would happen. Maybe I need to replace the magazine follower and spring on that thing.

First of all... good shootin'. Second of all... good shootin'.

I can barely use iron sights on the M44 at 50 yards. Hence the scout scope. Hoping I will have as-good results with the M39 as you did.

Apparently MM goter fixed.

My SKS has been absolutely flawless, but I don't enjoy it near as much as jacking rounds through the MN carbines. Those tiny little 7.62x39's just don't make thunder and fire like 7.62x54R .

But you can peel through ammo really fast.

I tend to agree Geo. Although the SKS is still a blast. It is the "thunder lust" that I have is why I am not much of a 22lr fan. With something that anemic I would need an interactive target to shoot at to have fun. The range I shoot at will not let us shoot at anything but paper targets. Need to find a gravel pit of something to play in.

Word of warning Geo. Don't get WD40 on the M39 stock. It takes the stain out of the wood.

The thank you goes to you for the offer to help! I knew I had someone on the other end that knew Mosins. THAT went a long way in my book as well. Some of the gunsmiths down here scare me.

Thank You and seeing as though you are still asleep at this hour I do hope you slept well. Thanks again!!

Before you give up that fast, Billy. Why not get yourself a case of red clay targets and put them up at 25 to 50 yards. The larger ones should be easier to see and when you hit one with a Mosin there will be no doubt whether you hit it or not!

I was referring to the trainer. Maybe you'll own it by the time we get together?

Oh, Ok...yeah, I may run down there after I hit Alaska Mining and Diving supply...Go check out that Trainer, maybe we can get together around lunch time...Then I have to go downtown to the DNR building for Dredge permits and some good Maps...(Yikes, I hate downtown Anchorage and the parking!)
