The tool kit that comes with the rifles, is there any sites are articles that explain what each item does and how you use it?

Also the cleaning rod...??? its short I stick a patch on the end and shove it through with the cleaning rod dont know if im using that right but the rod barely makes it through the barrel its so short.

mosins were issued with a muzzle cap so they can be cleaned from the muzzle with out chewing up the rifling, unforunatly most of the m 38's that were issued didnt get the use of the cap and chewed up the muzzle and so is why a lotta them are counter bored

I learned to clean from the breach but with mosins its from the muzzle or the rod will be to short

bluesbox, you're supposed to use one of the attachments such as the jag or the brush on the end of the rod which will make it a couple inches longer and thus, make it through the barrel just fine.

Though, personally, I use the Hoppe's .30 caliber cleaning kit with an aluminum sectioned rod. I figure using aluminum won't damage the threads since it's a softer metal.

Aluminum rods are the Worst thing to use for cleaning...Aluminum Oxide that forms on the outside is abrasive...Buy a Boresnake, or use a muzzle protector!

The cleaning kit that comes with the Russian Mosin should consist of 7 pieces to include the pouch and excluding the oil bottle. It should be considered a collectors item only. Why the SAM HILL do you think so many Mosins are counterbored? Right?
Collect one for each Mosin you own, that's cool. Get a 30 cal boresnake, and forget about all the other crappola! Comrades, Papa Stalin can see this S&^T!

I just use the boresnakes. 2 passes and the barrel is clean as a whistle. No rod to worry about marring up the rifling with. You just have to inspect them each time and check the stitching on the pull string before you use it. But I've never had a problem with them.

The Tipton rods are suppose to be good ones to use also. And you can always try and find some sort of a guide for it to keep the rod centered if you go that route.

Even though I don't have a Mosin yet, I thought I'd check out the link above that mooseman left. There's definately some interesting stuff there that's for sure. And from what some have said, it's rare to get that muzzle protector with any of them now? And from looking at the shape and material of some of them, couldn't someone go to their local local man store and find a wooden drawer pull about the shape of one of them and make one to fit/work? lol Just a thought. Hell, I'd try it. What's $.69 cents. lol

Point well taken Glock. But back to the point. There is NOTHING out there that cleans as efficiently and as harmless as a boresnake! I am truly honest in this estimation! Just try one and you will be convinced! I am looking at buying up all the cleanin kit I can find! Will tak a while, I'll get back when I have true 100% "as issued*.

I agree with the use of a boresnake. Them things is wondermous! I have one in my range box and one on my cleaning table. Never leave home with out a boresnake, Windex and Hoppe's no 9!

The Boresnake... one of mans great inventions. Two passes and she's good as new (actually better).

where do you get a bore snake? Is this made for gun cleaning or something you use from something else? I just got a cleaning kit for the #9 cleaning solution and the hops oil, the rods are for a shot gun and will be tossed. My mosin kit didnt come with a brush, but some kinda wierd looking thread tap thing that I wouldnt stick down my barrel.

Those old-style jag tips - the 'threaded' things, are difficult to use properly - I've gotten them stuck in the bore when I used too much patch! THAT is embarrassing at the range . . .
I used the issue Mosin cleaning kit ONCE - it works, but is so much trouble, you won't use it a second time. We now have much better devices.
