Ziess, sure, got about a grand to spare? lmao

Go with Bushnell or Nikon. Want to spend more cash, go for a Luepold. If you're not caring to much try BSA or Barska, not all that great, but they've gotten better and work. Then there's NC Star. They're kind of the sleeper scope. Some like 'em, others hate 'em, but I know from people that's used them, they work. And they have a wide variety also. Then there's Hawke and Millet brands.

As swedesteve asks, how much, and I'll add, how little you want to spend. Then you'll need the or a scope mount if none on it yet.

The NC Star wiht rear sight mount is a true sleeper. Certainly not a great scope, but from 2-6 power it's darned good, and the LER allows you load and cycle without further mods. Most of the people who don't like NC Stars didn't install the rear sight mount correctly. Mine is rock solid and works great at 100 yards. Without it I couldn't see squat at that distance.

I know what you mean Marion. I am afraid of those things. They hide in the grass and attack my shoe!

If you're using a scout mount, take a good look at a Weaver 4x28. Natchez Shooters Supply has good prices on them.

While a Zeiss or Leopold are the Cadillacs... try a Millett ... inexpensive with good reviews and for at least 1/2 to 1/4 the cost of the aforementioned scopes.

Yeah my problem with seeing squat(s) started in about 1991. Friggin' eye nibblers is what they are. It's when you try to immitate them by squatting is another matter.

To get back on topic...

You have a few choices. Some involve slight gunsmithing drilling and tapping for the scope mount and modifying to a bent bolt (typical MN's have straight bolts and were not designed for mounting a scope).

Others mount to the rear sight mount using a Long Eye Relief (LER) scope. This allows you to use the stock bolt and stripper clips. Just punch out the rear sight pin, remove the sight and spring, install the new weaver type scope mount, and level. Here is what it looks like on an M44:

Anyone have a video on how to mount that scope base? I think I understand it intellectually but I really need to see it a couple of time to be sure what I'm 'seeing' in my head is what is being talked about.

Yeah, I'm thinking about getting Mosin No. 2 and putting that NcStar LER scope on it. I like my 1926 too well to start modding her.

AH, That's the 1947 Izzy M44... almost new bore, cleaned up metal, and refinished stock. Removed the bayo but like the mounting tangs so I left them on. Could be returned to original in about 15 minutes. Perfect for an everyday rifle. This action will end up in my Richards walnut stock sooner or later.

Thanks GM. I have it's cousin an Izzy 1948 M44 all stamped matching with the Soviet hammer a sickle wreath cartouche' stamped in the stock. Cleaned and stored... looks similar except nicer grain and the upper hand grip matches the stock. I take it to the range and fire it once in a while to keep the cobwebs out.

by the time i reached the bottom, i thought this was another one of those "how to attach a scope to MN topics" had to read up to realize it was a scope question again.... i got an NCStar LER 2-7x 32mm for wholesale (buddy bought a box of em).... scope rings($15), and gunsmith to remove sight base ($50 plus $60 in gas cuz i went to the most reputable guy in the state) local guy didnt know what a sight base was when i showed him it -.-

Using the $8 aluminum quasi-Weaver mount could have saved you the cost of a gusmith and you could have bought another rifle.

But I guess I'm stating the obvious, and having a direct mount does lower the scope profile, and gives you a level mounting base from the get-go.

Any pictures? As we are voyeurs when it comes to Mosins.

i do have a pic from one of Billy's earlier posts that shows what mine will look like....and it actually is what gave me idea to do this to mine.
