| hi im steve i am new to the forum, i have a russian m44 made in 1944. O bought it for $150. It is one of my favorite rifles but i am looking for another one. Since i already have the carbine version i figured that i should get the m91/30. I need tips on buying one of these. I know the basics to look in the bore and all of that but i dont know the rare ones. I know that im probly not going to find one but you never know. I know how to tell if it is an ex sniper, MO,SK.y. Are the tula arsenals rare like the tula m44 is? Is there a big diffrence in accuracy? I want to know everything there is about this rifle. Thanks in advance Steve |

| Senior Member | tula doesnt mean rarity right off the bat, the tula and ishvezk(spelling?) arsenals were kind of adopted as the higher quality russian arsenals. mine just happened to be the tula arsenal, maybe that's why it's lasted for so long, and still operational. anyways, the older pre-1936(correct me if i'm wrong) M91/30's had a hexagon shaped receiver, they are usually more sought after, but most places only charge about $10 or so more for the hexagon shaped receiver versus the round receiver. a good price of a round receiver M91/30 in very good shape is on average about $90 or so....think that's about national average....altho some local places will charge upwards of $150-$250, just cause they believe they can find a sucker....only one i know of that's actually worth that amount are the ex-snipers, and they are pretty much the supreme quality M91/30's....according to what i've heard, they took the highest quality M91/30's from off the assembly line and tapped em for sniper mounts. not sure of the percentage of the ones used for snipers, so in turn i'm not sure of the numbers of remaining ex-snipers. but look online at a few places and see if the local shops will let you buy thru them for a transfer fee, a good transfer fee is around 10-15%....if no one will let you buy thru them, see how much they'll ask for 1 they can order, thru their supplier....they should want business tho.... anyways, dont overpay for a 91/30, especially a regular one, ex-sniper, ehhhh depends on shape....regular one, price range of $60-$120 for one in very good shape, depends alot on ur location, and if they have an over-stock of em. good luck.

| Prices DO vary. Plus, sometimes you can find things locally that are about the same or less expensive than ordering through a distributor and then adding in shipping and transfer fees. One word of caution on transfer dealers. Some try to charge you tax. That is a way for them to make extra money. Plus, transfer fees vary depending on the attitude of the customer. So do your research and go to a transfer dealer you know and trust. Sometimes the cheapest is not the best.

| Welcome to G&G Steve! A good idea is to go here: Rarity of Mosin Nagant Rifle Variations Print the page and carry it with you, so when you stumble onto some Mosins you can quickly go through them. Works for me! I usually use visual clues when I first look at Mosins. Any hex receivers? Brass handguards? That kind of thing. Look for different sling excutcheons as well. Being an exsniper does not necessarily mean accuracy. There is a reason they are EX snipers after all! They would be a good bet if you wanted to build a sniper repro though. Then start looking at markings, Tula or Izhevsk, matching serial numbers, stock cartouches etc. And of course price! Does it come with the usual accessories or not? Hope you find a great one! Don't forget to send us a pic!

| Welcome to the forum. You say you live in western Pennsylvania? Go online and look for gun shops in Ohio and down by Harriburg. Southern Ohio Gun and at least one importer in Harrisburg (can't recall the name offhand) are within easy reach of you. You could go and look. And, after you pay the $30 and get your Curio & Relic license, you can order Mosins online fairly easily, with no transfer fees. Try Classic Arms J&G, Southern Ohio Gun, IO; there are bunches of places with good Mosins available. For what it's worth, when ordering online the price difference between a round recevier Mosin 91/30 and a hex receiver 91/30 is about $10, most places. What can push up the price is specifying what you want; which arsenal, hex or round, or interwar, and requesting hand-select. |

| Another recommendation: Check the hanguard for splits and cracks. I am seeing more and more cracked ones nowadays.

| Counterbored barrels are not necessarily a bad thing. But a good bore that is not counterbored is a good thing. Mosins are fun to look at, fun to look for and rewarding to shoot. They go bang with the best of them and for a lot less. I might also say that they shoot better than a lot of other commercial rifles and the rifle performs with the best of them!

| I found that the handguard on my 1939 Tula 91/30 has a hairline crack running parallel to the grain. It hasn't split all the way, but I wholeheartedly echo your recommendation. Definitely check the handguard. |
