Idea for a build

It's 96% finished when you get it. This one is a second (has a few knots and (non visible) checks, and runs about $90 with shipping, and choice of pad, and takes about 8 weeks. There are several styles to choose from. Actually less $ than the ATI camo.

As you can see the last 4% is still quite a bit of work, as it's still relatively rough hewn, but I figure about a week if I stick to it. The toughest part may be the barrel, which I need to order the draw-cutters for. Local gunsmith quoted $90 to cut the barrel channel.

I will definately post pics when it's done.

I'll likely see Louie at the range next week. I'll get the information and get back to you with it. Louie indicated it isn't hard to do; he just squirts the stuff into the forearm of the stock with a caulking gun. I'll find out what brand he uses, and how much/how thick he uses it.

build a mold, fill with caulk, let it harden, and u got ur own homemade stock

I might be wrong, but wouldn't Accu-glass (available from Brownell's) be more durable than caulking?

in actuality, i think they meant a glass-like substance, but 'caulk gun' got evryone's attention and it ran away from there.

I think the original post suggested bath/tub caulk as it does not harden completely.

If I was gonna bed a rifle with caulk I would be using GE original silicone seal its is real silicone and never gets hard as a rock.

It seems weird to me to do the exact opposite (as opposed to free-floating), than what has been the standard for so long. But, as I have never tried it out, can't say one way or the other!

I thought that either way the idea was to make the stock to barrel connection as consistant, shot-to-shot as possible. By putting silicon in the free floating gap, you would still maintain the float (no actual stock contact), but also would dampen any vibrations caused by an air gap.

It makes sense, and makes bedding a lot simpler, even though the slicon compound would need to be high temp and durable.

I'm not a gunsmith and therefore no expert, but this idea offers a potentially elegant and simple solution to completing the barrel groove for my Richards stock.

Wait. I thought you only bedded a rifle at the reciever, leaving the barrel free-floating.

A10, I didn't mean that the silicon was the bedding, but just damping the float. The "silicon float" makes it really easy to cut the barrel groove (~1/8" taper) required on a custom stock (like the Richards). I'll post pictures when I get that far.

How do you damp a float? If it is floated, there's nothing to dampen. The barrel does not make contact with the stock.

Good point. But I think the idea is that on a long barrel (like the 91/30) the barrel vibration (resonance) can have an effect on accuracy. this may be hooee or may have some creedence. Just for the heck of it I'm going to try it on my Richards stock anyway. I'll take photos along the way.

Thanks for the reminder JAC. May add a lot of credence to the idea. Also consider that several of my former Mosins had wooden shims under the barrel.

Now I'm jazed about finsihing the stock as using a brown silicon to fill in the gaps will work very well. It takes a lot of the grunt work out of the equation. I don't mind hard work, but cutting a barrel channel just isn't my idea of fun...

just remove all the wood, and custom 'whittle' yourself a pistol grip, with an extended butt-stock for shoulder placement....that way you'll be full-float

that will be a sweet lil project geo, i hope your project does well.ive taken upon myself to bed my ati monte carlo with sealant as well! i will post photos along the way as well.

Ands thanks again cyrano for going through the trouble. im anxious to find out the kahuna way to bed a mosin. I can just see black betty now! its coming along . i just landed me a bent bolt body off of ebay Steve , so ill i think i need now is the pe mounts you reckomended. i took a look on ebay and they would be prefect. about 50 bucks for new production pe mounts. i just have to wait a while for some income(Blast!). just when you think your making progress on a project, Bam! pump gos out on the car. but thats life. if anybodys curious, starting bid is around 40$ on ebay. i shippings 5$. atleast the one i uncoved. there was a few on there, only difference is price diff. but i plan on getting one fairly soon. and i think im gonna put a burris fullfield 2 scope on it ive had on my 308. i like the feeling of mounts you can still take a look at those trusty irons.
