Called 2x4 bolt. You need a 2x4 to open it. You didn't clean the cosmo out of the bolt. When you get it open, strip it and clean as much and as hard as you can.

It's a figurative expression friend. 2x4 as in 2 by 4 as in, piece of wood. Try putting it on a carpeted floor and carefully trying to "Step" the bolt open. Make sure there is NO LIVE AMMUNITION in the weapon when you do so.

That depends on who you want to believe. Natasha, my 1926 Izzy 91/30, has a rear sight scale that runs up to 2000 meters. But the longest shot I ever saw (on a YouTube video) with a Mosin was at a buffalo-shaped metal target at 850 meters and the bullet drop was substantial at that distance. The shooter, firing from a rest, did hit the target, though.

In theory, I suppose a master sniper or someone in that league of shooting ability could hit a man-sized target at that range. For the rest of us, it's more like the joke where the AK-47 shooter, the AR-15 shooter and the Mosin shooter are talking about what their guns can do.

The AK-47 shooter claimed he could hit the broad side of a barn from inside it.

The AR-15 shooter claimed he could put 20 rounds through a knothole at 300 meters.

The Mosin shooter claimed he could hit the barn from two counties away.

That's about right.
Ruger 10/22 and Whitedevil84 like this.

As for the 91/30s main thing to look for is the overall condition of the rifle and look for a strong bore. Expect some frost. But strong rifling. Next look for easy operation of the bolt. Try a couple of them to compare. A lot of them are counterbored now but that is not a deal breaker. All arsenals made great guns. If you can look for one of the post war models. Hard to find but should be better bores. Most of the rifles were re arsenaled so will be in great shape. Just find one that says "Take me Home Schnittzle!" And you will be well pleased. Oh, when you buy one expect to do a lot of cleaning before you shoot it. Even if it looks fairly clean it ain't. Read the sticky on cleaning and have a blast!!!

Hey thanks for the information. I have never owned or for that matter even looked at them real hard. However, today after reading your post I went right out and purchased two. went in to get one and they had two that looked good so i took them home. they are both 91/30s havent hit the range yet but I cant wait. So now I will probably be on here asking you all some stupid questions.

P.S the cleaning will begin now

thanks again
Will

more or less. just look and see if the rifling is consistent, no pitting and stuff, I was told if its dark and not shiney, stay away..

My mossin m44 is hard to fully lock into position with a round. Before anyone tells me to clean it thoroughly let me say that i have. Many many times. I am wondering if this is a relatively easy thing for a gunsmith to do or is it not worth even trying to do. and if it is worth doing whats a average price range for such work?
I know this is late, but what kind of ammo were you using?
I bought 500 rds. of steel cased Russian mnf. stuff and about one in five won't chamber. It's not the gun, it's the ammo. It was made for machine guns and they don't work like a rifle and can digest ammo with greater tolerances.

Awesome, I just bought a big 5 lammy Russian mosin. It was an impulse buy. I liked the way it looked and read good things about them plus it was on sale for 99.99. It had a cycle and hammer stamp on the reciever cover. I live in califorian "sigh" so I'm in day 2 of a 10 day waiting period. Cant wait to take it to the range! Great post marion

Dunno where to put this so I'll try here. When I am shooting my 91/30 I notice that just before I release a round as I am drawing back on the trigger the cocking knob seems to move downwards. A nice visual indication that I'm right on the edge of the sear, but just a trifle disconcerting. I don't seem to notice this on my M39 finn. Any comments?
