| Senior Member | The great thing about being a Torpedoman on a DD or DDG was that as a second class I ran the torpedo deck, and had a couple of "strikers". Stood my watches in sonar, and hung out with the GM's. In warzones I was generally part of the guncrew. Most of the time though, my job code put me on tenders (AD's on each coast). How I ended up on destroyers is a long story, but it was a blast. Last edited by Geo M44; 03-30-2008 at 09:01 PM. |

| Moderator ![]() | My shipboard time was spent on an Anti-submarine Warfare Frigate - laughingly termed a "Fast Frigate" - topping out at 27 knots, any good Destroyer could run circles around us. As the Frigate sailors say - "We do it with one good screw!" ![]() I was an Electronic Tech (a "Twidget" as we called them), but I berthed with the Fire Control Techs and Gunner's Mates forward. The compartment had good ventilation - the Ops berthing (mostly ETs and EWs) stank. Often, I slept in the Radar Room or in Radio Central. Navy Chiefs are a force on board ship - they keep the wheels turning! A lower rank NCO approached the Goat Locker with reverence and fear . . . ![]() My Senior Chief knew his gear. I once hit a test point (275 volts DC!) and accidentally slung the screwdriver at the door - just as Senior Chief walked in. He says - "Test point 12!" I admitted, "Yes, Senior Chief!" I never hit it again . . . ![]() He introduced me to the rare and elusive "Shorted Fuse" - later in a C-school, I aced the Ace Breaker in lab - they couldn't believe I knew of the Shorted Fuse trick! Hehehe!

| Grumpy Old Fart ![]() | Ran into a navy guy yesterday at the Gun Shop, and started talking milsurplus. Really knew his US stuff, and I picked his brain on a few things. He picked up a M44, and asked me if I knew anything about these "Mo-sand'z". So we talked about them, and had the owner pull a box of ammo so he could see the cartridge. The one he was looking at was $110 (about average around here) and in really nice shape. He ended up putting it back, and I went outside to have a cigarette to clear my lungs of that squidly/kelp smell (LOL). When I went back in, he was buying it! I told him about G&G and our crew here. So hopefully he'll show up!

The 12" vertical scar with two X scars at the base of the ribs where the drainage tubes used to be, is a lifelong reminder for bypass veterans. Surgeons use the same entry and exit strategy for lung surgery, but instead of running new hoses to make you feel better they are taking things out that normally help you breathe... ![]() As a G&G freind...just trying to save you a little pain down the road. |

| Senior Member | heres the intesting part, the A-10 Warthog was designed in part by Hans Ulrich Rudel, the famous Stuka ace and the only German in the Second War to win the Knights Cross with Golden Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds, as well as being credited with destroying 800 vehicles, 519 tanks, 150 artillery guns, a destroyer, two cruisers and 9 aircraft which he shot down. As well as sinking the Soviet battleship Marat, during an air attack on Kronstadt harbor in the Leningrad area, he dropped the bomb right down the funnel, according to his autobiography Stuka Pilot. According to his design the A-10 actually would have been FASTER than it is now.
