Don't you hate it when you're just about ready for the range trip, and realize you have to open up a spam can of milsurp? Then there is no key, or the strip breaks off, so you have to chisel it open.

We should start a thread on how to open an ammo can.

Heres my rant

OK, so i fired my mosin for the first time last weekend. It seems to me that one of the previous owners must have cleaned the metal parts but not the stock. After putting 30-40 rounds through it, it was so slippery we couldn't really shoot it anymore. I tried to put the stock in the oven, not big enough, the dishwasher, not big enough. I finally tried to use a heat gun on it, seemed to work OK, but on one part of the stock the shelac or whatever bubbled. So, i suppose I am going to have to refinish it when all is said and done. I guess i am going to try the detergent method. Actually I am about to say screw it, and go to dunhams and buy a monte carlo stock.
What do you guys think of those aftermarket stocks? I will end up finishing up the original stock anyway, but my "projects" seem to take awhile. Especially in the summer lol

I've become a big fan of the ATI stock (at least the more espensive camo version). That said, done right, the birch stock generally refinishes very nice (I've done 3 now using DPD, and refinishing with red mahogany stain and polyurethane).

If you have an M44, and go the synthetic stock route, the barrel rings will be lost (they won't fit past the bayo mount).
