Scouts?

Exactly how good are the Mosins converted to scout-style rifles? I've been thinking about making one, and I just want to make sure that it's a good idea.

And if it is, what sort of scope mount and LER scope should I buy?

Thanks guys!

Ferro.

I'm working on converting mine to a scout style too. So far I'm guess the sturdiest mount would have to be the dovetails underneath the front sight. It is fairly simple to take off, Just take hand guard off pop the two pins out with a punch then slide the sight off. My figure was, if I'm gonna replace the front sight, just do it the most practical, and cheap, way. Ya some front sight mounts don't cost much, but hey, for the little amount of money saved you can put it towards something else.

The 91/30 has the dovetail under the REAR sight mount. The cabines do not.
If you use this dovetail make sure that you get tall rings or you will have clearance problems at the eyepiece of the NC Star LER scopes.

For carbines the rear sight mounting rail is available on e-bay (as are the scopes. As always I add that you need to be extremely patient, and follow directions on this type of mount, as they are aluminum with steel allen-head screws, so do not overtighten.

The rest is repeated many times on other threads here at the MN board.

Done correctly it should looks something like this (the rings are now gone):

It's just an ATI camo stock. I left on the bayo tangs, and the rifle can be restored using different barrel bands (the only parts I had to cut to remove). Camo Natalia is a 1947 M44 with almost new barrel, and great metal, but was by no means a collectable (elecropenciled bolt and rusted/pitted barrel bands. Even the stock had absolutely no markings, and had a replacement hand guard so she was the perfect candidate for sporterizing.

Now she is a compact sexy little Russian wench, that looks great and is a blast to shoot.

I have a 1948 with perfect metal, great markings, and beautiful stock, and a M44 Tula that have been cleaned, but will stay completely as-is. I am looking for another project barrel and action for the richards walnut stock down the road.

Same basic ATI stock, but the camo version costs 2X.

I see alot of people leaving the bayonet lugs on when they put a synthetic stock on but has anyone left the bayonet on just for Sh...s & Giggles?

I am using the e-bay set up. Mount, rings, and 2-7 x 32 LER (Long Eye Relief) scout scope. I cut the mount to fit, instead of leaving on a bunch of rail I don't need.

Yeah, but it sticks out' and since the forward part of the stock is not solid, cutting the clearence for a bayo gets tricky... and it spoils the esthetics.

Just thought I'd ask. I see sporterized Mosin too often here that people leave the bayo lugs on. Suppose someone good with wood could make a custom wood stock for that type of application. Make it have more of a pistol grip instead of the swept shape on the Mosin stocks now.
