I like the pistol grip, but that is just personal preference.

Ditto to Steves reply. But if they all look like mine, it doesn't much matter. Certainly a looker.

In fact I like the standard issue Russian stocks once they are cleaned up.

I've always admired good wood on a rifle. While the Mosin's can be plain, there are still some nice ones!

They don't. It's a long creep then a snap. This makes them feel like they have two stage. Even regular 91/30 can be made like this with a little playing and polishing.

Wrongo! What you are describing is a 2 stage trigger. And you don't need to play with a regular M91/30 either, it already has the 2 stage trigger as well.

M39SKY...I hate to tell you but THAT is a 2 stage trigger !!
If it has slack with little or no Resistance to a point that you take up and then pull against the resistance to fire, It is 2 Stage Pure and simple.
If when cocked there is no slack, it is single stage !

Hmm. I was under the impression that a two-stage trigger has something to do with the mechanism (like that of K-31, Mauser 98). And no Mosin variety has one. So, it's about that slack? I'm learning more each day. Thanks.

Thanks for clearing that up, Moose. I was wondering why Natasha's trigger pull felt so long, yet had such a crisp let-off. It felt like a two-stage, but I didn't think the Soviets went in for that for rifles meant to be used in the line.

What are the advantages of a two stage trigger?

A two stage trigger has two definite stages, first, a "take-up" stage, and then a "release" stage. This is usually accomplished either by the configuration of the trigger cam, which contacts the sear, as on military rifles, or separate spring adjustments for the two stages, as on target guns. The benefit of two stage triggers is that you can take up the first stage, hold, and then follow through with the shot, when the sight picture look right. The perceived weight of the firing stage, being the difference between the two stages, is lighter than the actual weight of pull. What's great about two-stage triggers is that it lets you get your grip settled, including how your index finger is positioned on the trigger without having to worry that you might fire the gun before you mean to.
With a light single-stage trigger, I always have to be careful of as I bring my finger onto the trigger. The problem is that, by definition, your finger is moving as you bring it onto the trigger. With a two-stage trigger, you can settle out all the movement in that take-up stage so that when you reach the second stage, you can be very still and only have to move your finger just a tiny bit to fire the gun. I find I have much more control that way.
