Cleaning Patches

I just got back from the range and I forgot to buy some cleaning patches. Anyone got any good ideas for a substitute?

An old white T-shirt. Cut it up. Some of your wifes make up pads, if not a small bored firearm. But an old T-shirt cut up will work fine. Just make sure to get any loose threads off and use an X-acto knife or razor blade to cut it. Less of a mess in my book.

Glad it worked out though. I knew it would. I've had to go that route before myself. I think at one time or another we all have or will...

I knew a guy once whose wife worked for an underwear co. I think it was hanes. She would bring home scrap. So if you have kids and they have outgrown theres you can cut them up. It works good. Just make sure you wash them first.

Old bedsheets are good too. Less lint and threads than T-shirt material.
Wally's has bags of T-shirt material scraps in the gun-cleaning stuff. Needs to be cut into proper sizes though. I cut most into .30 caliber size, and the smaller pieces into .22 size. Enough to last a good while.
Be careful though - one bag I got was a silky neglige-type material - lousy for gun-cleaning! Won't soak up oil, leaves fuzzy residue in the bore. So don't use you GF's old underwear!!

Dad had a pile of pillow ticking rags he got from somewhere and every so often we'd cut a couple of them up into patches. Worked just fine. Almost any natural fiber cloth will work if it's not excessively thick or stiff. Example: old denim from dungarees that have worn out and been washed soft works just fine. Denim scrap from a bolt of cloth doesn't because it's too stiff. The stuff I've been getting at the gun shop seems to be unbleached cotton duck, the stuff light-air/tropical service sails were made out of in the sailing ship days. That's about ideal.
