I dont know were I got it, but there is a lubricant called Slide-n-glide that i use in my bolt and in all moving parts in my Mosin and have had no rust problem, course my stuff is mostly blued, except at points of extreme wear.

I tried the vinegar, it kinda works, but takes forever. I am getting some naval jelly and will try that. Now, how do you get the metal to shine? Would I buff it with something?

For my 91/30, I removed my blue with that remover you buy from WallyWorld. that took a long time, so I used something different. I found that an acid sold at home depot and lowes...used to clean concrete, I can't remember the name. All I have to say, is I won't use it again. First, it was $10.00 for two 1 gallon jugs of it. You'd probably only need half a cup. Second, it took the stuff off so fast (literally seconds) and strong, that I hardly had time to finish removing the blue on the entire gun, before the area where I started began showing signs of metal corrosion (rust and corrosive film). Third, the rebluing you buy at WallyWorld is just not the same. I didn't really like it and it was a lot of work. Forth, the stuff I used just smelled so bad! I smelled the stuff in my kitchen for probably 2 weeks. My wife came home from visiting family out west and wanted to know what the funny discolorations on her kitchen counter were...and "what is that smell?"

Next time, talk to us about that. Some of us on here are rather familiar with doing things like that and others (like myself) are familiar with the effects and best use of chemicals. As an aside, I'm scheduled to graduate in August with my degree in chemistry.

Bluing off

I bought an old S$W 28 and the first time I cleaned it the bluing started coming off so I stripped it. That was 10yrs. back and it hasn't rusted at all. I wipe a little CLP on it whenever I think of it........before the CLP I just sprayed a little WD-40 on it and wiped it off. I have an M48 and the entire receiver is bare metal and I really like how it looks. Wouldn't even think of having it reblued.

So the Navel Jelly works like a charm, still takes some rubbing with steel wool, but the end result is nice. One of you had mentioned using a clear coat on the metal to preserve the shine...what might that clear coat product be?

Probably muriatic acid. Used to clean mortar stains from brick It will eat holes in concrete...........big holes if it stays on long enough.

Muriatic acid is a fairly high concentration of Hydrochloric acid (HCl). It can be purchased in bulk at home improvement stores and pool supply stores.

I highly suggest Nitrile (NOT latex) gloves and, at a minimum, splash goggles if not full-face mask with respirator (I use my Israeli civilian gas mask) because you REALLY don't want to get this stuff in your eyes and it will burn your lungs.

Yeah, some real nasty stuff. It will literally take blueing off in seconds with no scrubbing...I hear it's also good as a wart remover, mole remover, toe fungus remover, skin remover, in-laws remover, unsightly hair remover, etc. The list goes on!
