between the M44 and the M38, for hunting, a M38 would be better as the lack of a bayonet doesnt screw with the harmonics of the gun as much as it does with the M44, as the M44 is meant to shoot with the bayonet extended. If its counterbored it needed it. PS. try to use a carbine length gun for hunting, using an M91/30 you have a lot of extra barrel to contend with, carbine not alot of that worry, plus the carbine fireball is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!
