Like Mooseman, I use wood furniture stripper - Formby's For Antique Wood - it is easier on the wood structure, and will save your cartouches. It's used to do expensive fine furniture - so it's good enough for our $90 Mosins....

To each their own. I had a lot of trouble with cosmolene leach-through after using Formbys and other high quality varnish strippers. DPD works great. You just need to do a thorough job of rinsing.
