| Senior Member | Removing the rear sight base to get to the dovetail only works on long rifles i.e. 91/30's. Carbines don't have this hidden treasure. Somewhere we have this info on this board.

| Senior Member | It's on all models Cyr. Billy was the first one, to my knowledge, on the forum here to show us that amazing little trick. It's a nice 3/8" dovetail and sometimes can be very difficult to discern as it usually sits very flush with the sight base and the top-center of the dovetail is almost flush with the apex of the receiver curve. Edit: sorry, I might be wrong here. I assumed carbines had them as my m91/59's have them. But, as I thought for a second, they are m91/30's cut down to carbine length, so of course they'd have them. Doh!

| Senior Member | So the M38 does not have them? I just got back from the range with my 1943 M38. I have dubbed it "Boris Badinov" because A) it's shorter than Natasha; B) it's nowhere near as pretty or well made; C) the rear sight is FUBAR'd, it refuses to lock in on the slots at various ranges and has to be set to 200 meters to hit the target at 50 meters; and D) it's cranky as hell, not wanting to accept stripper clips and being stubborn about chambering the first round in the magazine. The idea of putting a scope on Boris in very attractive just now, but I'd much prefer to use the dovetail if it's there than futz around with the aluminum rails. |
