SS: Maybe you should send it to me for safe keeping? I'll make sure Mooseman doesn't try to talk you out of it!
I promise I'll keep her warm, talk to her, and feed her good surplus ammo!

If you need to touch that finish up sometime, Steve, I'm almost 100% sure it's plain old orange shellac. At least I'll swear that's what mine has, and yours looks to be about the same color.

It's funny you should bring that up troy! I was just now looking at her compared beside my M38. I was trying to figure out why she was so light in color!

I used to do a lot of work in the mountain areas of Idyllwild and Big Bear, Steve. Most of the older cabins had tongue-and-groove knotty pine on the walls, finished in orange shellac. They also used it on cabinets and trim. So I've seen a lot of the stuff, and that's sure what it looks like to me.

There's a web page kicking around on the internet where a guy talks about stripping and refinishing his 91/59, and he goes into heartbreaking detail about all the things he did trying to reproduce that lovely butternut color. Had he only known... All he had to do was buy a can of orange shellac, and a little denatured alcohol to cut it with. Since orange shellac darkens with age, he might have needed to put a drop or two of coloring in the new stuff to get an exact match.
