Synthetic stock question

I am putting a synthetic stock on one of my 91/30s. Do you need to free float the barrel on a synthetic stock? I know wood stocks need the free floating due to changing humidity causing the stock to touch the barrel and affect accuracy. Does this hold true for synthetic stocks? The reason I am asking is my new synthetic stock seems to touch the barrel alot.

P.S. I know it is sacrilegious to put a synthetic stock on these old war rifles, but I will be able to return it to original whenever I please. I just need an old cheap rifle to leave at my mother-in-laws to go pig hunting whenever I fly in.

It's yours do as you see fit. As far as free floating the barrel you are going to have to shoot it and see if the stock touching the barrel affects it.

When you put the stock on, try running a dollar bill betweeh the barrel and stock. If it qon't pass all the way down to the receiver, then free-float it.

Yep, know the dollar bill trick, but was wondering if it applies to a synthetic stock. Does anyone know where I can get an extra wood stock? I'm not too happy with this synthetic stock. I think half of it is on my counter where I have been grinding it down trying to free float it.

If I recall some years ago Remington purposely had the tip of the forearm high to touch the barrel on some models claiming it helped accuracy?

The same goes for corking the barrel (using sheet cork to contact the forward 1" of the stock) to reduce barrel vibration. That said, my Camo ATI M44 (Camo Natalia) works just fine.

I was assuming he had already shot it and didn't like the results.

It's no more sacreligeous than any other rifle. There are just a bunch of zealots out there running around telling people that. I have no idea why.

There are 27 million 91/30's out there (yes really!), and a ton of older and somewhat rarer 1891's, 91/10's, dragoons, cossack's, and etc. that you might want to keep original, and hell, there are several million of those wandering around as well. Later model (1946-1948) Russian M44's are rarer in number than early models.

If you sporterize 13 million that still leaves 14 million in original "re-arsenal" condition. That's not to be confused with original condition, which most are not. I have 2 fairly rare M44's and an M39 that I probably will do no more than refinish the stocks to look original. The cosmolene and 3 coats of arsenal varnish are not original issue. The M39 was perfect right from the get-go so nothing to do there anyway

As a final thought: Changing stocks is not an irreversable modification, nor is adding a scope. You can always put "humpty" back together again.
