I bought a 91/30 nagant a few years ago and the stock was in a pretty poor condition I've stripped the origional finish off of it and bought a gun stock finish kit. I heard before that you soak the stock in linseed oil and it will help protect the stock from absorbing water. is there anything else that I should do before I start to refinsh the stock? thanks |

Make sure all of the cosmoline is out of the wood. If you want a really smooth finish, sand the stock in progressively smoother finishes until you get down to 400 for an original-type finish or 600+ for a show-type finish. I use a propane torch to lightly run over the surface to remove the "whiskers" and then go over the surface several times with degreased 0000 steel wool. Repeat this procedure several times until you're satisfied that all of the whiskers are gone. Apply the linseed oil in light coats, allowing it to dry completely and rub with the degreased 0000 steel wool between coats and repeat until you get the desired finish. After you get it where you want it, apply a good furniture wax or carnauba wax for a nice shine.

No prob. FWIW, I prefer to use Watco Danish oil as it dries much faster and soaks into the wood before hardening, making the surface of the wood harder. If you decide to try it, just be sure to hang your used rags outside to dry. There have been several instances where guys just tossed them in the trash and had them spontaneously ignite due to the combustible vapors.
