A lot of M\N receivers have been ruined by someone trying to wrench it off the barrel and twisted it. I'm not trying to dissuade you, just saying..." Toolman is right. Besides new barrel, typical MN would likely need lots of other things to qualify as good shooter, so just changing the barrel may not be enough. |

| Super Moderator ![]() | I have seen a lot of Surplus guns that the bore looked bad...The rifling is packed with crud and grease...But they cleanup pretty nice and after some shooting and proper cleaning they look Good !

| Grumpy Old Fart ![]() | I've had two barrels pulled recently, one week apart. The 'smith charged me $20 each. I asked him how difficult it was and he said not too bad.

| Member | Well I say if the barrel is not packed with rusty chunks when you try to force a cleaning rod through it then the barrel should be fine. I have several Mosins and even though the barrels appear worn out they shot just fine. I only ran into one rifle- and that was a No5 Jungle Carbine, that really needed a new barrel and that was in reference to the first line in this post. Besides if it is a Hex 91/59 you don't want to mess with changing out the barrel just for collecters value. |

| Grumpy Old Fart ![]() | Gonna wait on the range report. Moose talked me into cleaning up a M91 I bought for parts. It's a pretty good shooter !! I had to start with a 22LR brush !! kortik- What's a typical Mosin ??

| Сергей Иванович Мосин ![]() | Ok, to start it all off. My "new" M44's best effort (And mine without coffee haha) put up a 2.09" grouping at 75 yards. No matter what I tried though, it was always about 9" off center. Then I put out the bayonet and smacked myself for not remembering it haha. Anyways, Katerina was performing nicely today and I think I just need more practice to firm up my groupings. The M91/59. Well... I personally couldn't do better than 3" today :-/. It didn't seem too dangerous (at least not as bad as I thought it was) and I ran a bore light in and it doesn't look as bad as I thought it did. It's not perfect though. I'd say it'd be an "alright" shooter, not great. I had trouble believing that my M44 would be better, but part of that may be that I spent hours cleaning her and giving her TLC. I'm sort of see-sawing on it. What do y'all think? Buy as a semi-collectible and sometimes shooter and not worry about it? Buy and swap the Barrel and keep the original for whatever reason? |

| Senior Member | Here are just my thoughts: 1) If you are looking forward to working on your rifle just for the sake of doing something with it then go for it. Personally I like working on my guns and swapping the barrel would be an interesting, and challenging project (at least for me as I have never done it so far). 2) You could decide to simply enjoy your M44 as is and add it to your collection. Shoot it once in a while, lovingly clean it afterwards, and just "live" with it's "flaws" (after all, it's a Carbine not a 91/30). 3) Add it to your collection and keep looking for a nice shooter. (Aah, another rifle 4) Trade it for another (potentially) "better" shooting one. If I had to make a decision I would go with no. 3 Just my two cents since you asked.

| Сергей Иванович Мосин ![]() | Question about 2... I wasn't talking about doing anything to the M44, just to the 91/59... Am I just misreading your post in assuming you are talking about my M44? Anyways, that all sounds pretty good to me haha, especially about adding it to my collection and looking for a better shooter (or maybe just an M38). |

Money comes and goes, but guns and tools are forever. I'd buy it just because it's a hex 91/59 and you may not see another one available. Then again, I'm running out of storage space, so what do I know? ![]()

| Сергей Иванович Мосин ![]() | Oh no ingous, it's all good. I'm pretty happy with the M44. It's got a nice enough bore and it's not ever going to be a tack driver (And I doubt I could shoot that well anyways) so I'm happy with it. I'm pretty unhappy with the 91/59 though. IT does shoot and not "horribly", but it's not exactly as great as I'd wish. I think I'm going to buy it on general principle though because as Troy says, it is a Hex 91/59 and also because I have trouble passing up guns in general :-). -Erik |
