Good finds at Cinco Grande!

It struck me that it was Monday today, and that Big 5 not only gets their new shipment of guns, but starts a new sale. I know, you truly have to have mosinitis to associate Mondays with Big 5 and Mosins!

Anyway, when I got there, they had 3 nice M44s for 89 bucks each. One was from 1945 and two were from 1948. I've been searching for a nice postwar M44, so I was pretty interested in the 1948s. They both were very nice with AWESOME bores and sharp rifling. I would think that neither had ever been issued or fired except that the magazines on both were force-matched. Oh, well. I picked one over the other only because the other one had a lame black paint touch up on the receiver (probably from Century Arms).

As I was getting my paperwork completed, I noticed that one of the 91/30s which was still on sale for $89 from the previous week's sale (once again, Mondays rock at Big 5!) had an interesting stock repair up by the bolt. It was obviously done when the gun was re-arsenaled.

I pointed this out to the guy working there, and he mentioned that it may be an ex-sniper because of the repair. I had never heard of this being a feature of ex-snipers, but I was now pretty curious so I had him pull it off the rack. Lo and behold, it had the 2 filled in holes and was a 1943 Izzy ex-sniper in very good shape! The only real flaw is that is has been counterbored, but that didn't bother me. I already have 4 other Mosins that aren't counterbored.

Long story short, I got an awesome 1948 Izzy M44 and a 1943 Izzy ex-sniper for $195 after tax and am quite pleased.

I'm pretty busy right now, so pictures to follow.

Nice, I have gotten my mosins for big5 as well. Did they have any laminated 91-30? I noticed the one in my area did for 108.00 or so. I couldnt get it because i had just gotten a m44 the week before (wish I had waited a week).

Yes. They did have a laminated 91/30 with an unusual blond/yellow color to it which looked nice. I didn't take a look at it, and didn't see the price tag. It was at the Big 5 in Lakewood.

Here's a picture of the stock repair on the ex-sniper. Correction to the date. She's a '44, not a '43.

Sorry for the picture quality, I only have my phone's camera.

Good find. Cinco Grande rocks (sometimes). The fun is in the hunt and the pain is when you find 2 or 3 that you really want.

I passed on an original stock 1944 and kick myself as somebody snached it up before I could get back to buy it.

Snooze ya loose.

YOU feel deprived, gandog? Try living in the Peoples Democratic Republic of New York! We don't even have an Gander Mountain around here, much less a Big 5!

I just found a big 5 in Spokane, might have to make a trip out pretty soon.

I've heard so much about the deals at these places, might have to snoop around.

Nice pick ups.

Well I haven't seen any really good Mosins around the Lacey/Olympia area where I am from. I bought my Steyr M95 there, and it could have been in better shape. But thats a cool find an ex-sniper.

Marion, I don't know what part of MO you are in but if you are close to the eastern border or the northern border they have Duhnam's sports that is the equal of big 5. I have found some good things in there. Lot's of crap also but some good finds just as well.

They have 91/30s and M44s on sale for 70 Bucks right now.

The local Bass Pro does not carry MilSurps as a stocking item, and when they are in the used rack they cost a mint. On the other hand I have 4 Big 5's within 7 miles.

We have a new Dick's going in down the street. the one in Phoenix does not carry MilSurps, but maybe this one will.

I have yet to find a good C&R deal on a gun from Gander Mountain.

Nary a one. Most of the towns up around here have some kind of tackle shop, and many of the gun shops are also sporting good (read: fishing tackle) shops. But most of the gun shops around here with one notable exception deal only in modern guns and accessories. Oh, they might have a few C&R-type guns in a corner or the back of a display cabinet, but by and large they're flogging Benellis, current production S&W, Glocks, Walthers, Thompson/Center, etc. I think you have to get out of commuting distance of a big city before you'll find a Gander Mountain or a Bass Pro Shop in New York. As far as I know, the nearest one is in Hartford, CT and that's at least 2 hours away; andn they don't sell guns, I'm told; just ammo, and only modern production ammo at that.

Fortunately we have a couple of Gun Shops that sell C&R guns here in Los Anchorage. It is how I scored a Swede M38, my Tula Sniper and just about every Mosin I own save 2. It would be awesome to have a Big 5 up here or something like one. You guys are pretty lucky that live near one.

gandog?

Paper has solved that problem.

He has set up a room in his house, with a counter, ammo, after-market accessories, and racks of various rifles--new and used--on the walls. Last I heard, he was trying to reconfigure an old cash register to always ring "No Charge," no matter what numbers were punched in.

He's thinking of calling the room "Heaven."
