In short, because millions of them were made. They are however excellent rifles, better than many modern ones.

Just means more for me to buy. When the gun cost less than a tin of ammo, it can be a good thing.

Because the Czarists & Soviets produced or had manufactured abroad for use in Russia something on the order of 25 million of that model of Mosin-Nagant alone. There are literally millions of them still surviving from as far back as the Russo-Japanese War; some of them are cut-down Model 1891s that were rearsenaled in the 1930s, other were built that way. Although some arsenal marks are rare, the 91/30 model is common as crabgrass. And bear in mind the Soviets weren't the only ones who made them. Still more common.

That explains why by firearms standards for really reliable bolt action rifles, they are cheap as dirt. That answer your question? Buy one. You'll come to love it once you get used to your shoulder being walloped. Most aren't tack-drivers, but all of them shoot to minute of deer, once you adjust them so the point of impact = point of aim.

You know any other good, powerful rifle you can buy for less than $100 that can do that?

Yeah. Every time I take my m-39 to the range, I get dirty looks from people with AR's with their targets at 50 yards with optics because I'm outshooting them at 100 yards on iron sights

The (Finnish) M39 is truely a tack driver... but costs a tad more than a Russian 91/30, M38, or M44. But $260-$350 is still not bad.

Actually, I got my M-39 for $160. They had thought it was a Finnish 91/30, and didn't know too much about Mosins. But, now they have three or four arsenal new M-39's that they are selling for $350.

In addition, since I helped my brother get a 91/30 for his birthday (he'd previously never heard of Mosins), my dad's been kind of eyeballing them kind of like a puppy on a short leash would eyeball a nice, thick steak. I think my stepmom is holding the leash. So... for his combined birthday/father's day thing, I'm planning on getting him an M-44.

I'm jealous...Out here in Vancouver BC Canada, I paid $225 for my 1944 Tula ex sniper.....I saw one at Cabela's (outside of Olympia?) going for $99, but it's illegal for me, as a Canadian, to transport a 64 year old obsolete bolt action rifle across the border, even though I possess a Restricted firearms permit. (I work for an armored car company). I was able to buy a hardshell rifle case and bipod for my Remington 700 with no problem though. WTF???

Bravo, Cy! The best rational explanation for being afflicted with Mosinitis I've seen lately! (Anything else is totally implausible, totally irrational - and probably true!)

Same reason WE can't buy those nifty guns that MARSTAR has (in Canada) and bring them down here. Silly anti-gun laws.

I'm sure that it's for the common good. You have to realize that legislators (where ever they are) need to protect us from ourselves. For every firearm or round of ammo they prevent from falling into citizens hands it's one less threat to socialism. An unfounded fear...

They should be shooted!

You too? Don't pin it all on AR shooters, though. Even when I shoot my own AR (100 yards; iron sights; no tacticool bling; freestanding), I get the same looks. It hasn't got anything to do with the type of rifle, it has to do with understanding that what an accurate gun most needs to put holes in the target is an accurate shooter.
