| Senior Member | Mosinitis contagious? Hey Guys, While i do not own a mosin, i've been hanging out in this forum reading all about them. I have a question, ya'll talk about how much it kicks... what is it comparable to? I want a big boomer i can take out to the range just to mess around with and hurt my shoulder.(I'm 22 and in good shape so im not too worried) I also own a .270 and that has a decent crack to it, but i want something spectacular. Otherwise i think ill go with a more spendy muzzle loader just to make some major smoke clouds. As far as looks tho, the Mosin just looks really pretty. I would not change a thing, maybe refinish if it is all beat to hell. But i'm just kinda looking around right now. Any suggestions on buying these things would be great. I dont really know what im looking for. Last edited by SoDakHunter; 07-09-2008 at 03:45 PM. Reason: Edit due to rambling |

| Senior Member | It's very contagious!!! In a matter of a short time, you'll have all your questions answered by the best G&G has to offer and by those who have had Mosinitis for many years...

| Senior Member | Yeah i just want a spectacular show when i fire that thing down the range. As far as having a "tack driver" i already have those. I dont need anything super accurate, i want a giant fireball and still be able to hit the target. But as far as noise and recoil, what is it comparable to? |

| Member | Check out this video: YouTube - Mosin Nagant M44 Fire Burst Slow Motion You don't always see the flash until the video goes to slow-motion. I think that's because the flash happens so fast that it doesn't sync with the bit-rate of the video at normal speed. Last edited by toivo; 07-09-2008 at 05:06 PM. Reason: spelling |

| Senior Member | I would say the 91/30 is comparible with the 308 and the m44 might be a little above the 30-06 because of the shorter barrel. The blast is really something to see at dusk and the sound is amazing. it is really cool when you have to actually use the m44 bayonet to be able to hit the target. everyone at the range thinks your some crazy Rambo or something. the bayonet on the m44 has to be extended or else it will shoot about 1 foot to the left. as far as accuracy though, I can hit a 2'x2' steel plate at 300yds using the iron sights. The gun is cheap, the ammo is cheap, and the sound and kick are huge! P.S. once I bought my first m44, I bought a 91/30 the next week and had to bring it back because of bore problems but then bought another one two weeks after that! I am looking for another m38 or a Finn m39 to add to my new collection. If you are on a tight budget and don't want more than one, I would suggest you don't even visit this forum again . Unfortunately, you probably already caught mosinitus.

| Military Rifle Collector ![]() | An M44 kicks like a M95 Steyr. It is close to a 95 Mauser. More than a 98 Mauser. But less than a Number 5 Jungle carbine. And less than a M95 Carbine. It is more than a P17 and a 03A3. But it is less than a .30-06 Argetine Mauser which has the worst recoil I have ever felt. An M44 is a lot more than a Garand and an Enfield. It is also more than an AR-15 and M1 Carbine. Thats pretty close.

| Senior Member | Mosin m44/Type53 recoil was comparable to the 308 class cartridges, the shorter barrel you will have a good flame signiture when fireing near dusk at the shooting hole "local name for the range" it doesent cost much, shoots a wierd metric cartridge, is a military rifle with a hand guard and a cool looking front ring sight, provision for a sling, aftermarket stuff can be had to wierd it out some "stocks, sights, scopes, bipods, muzzle breaks" |

Getting back to your main point: If you're looking for spectacular, buy a .45-70 and get the barrel sawed off to 16 1/2 inches. If you're looking for an enjoyable shooter, get either a 91/30 or one of the Finns. Still have a decent boom and flash, and you'll still have a shoulder. If you know enough to pull it hard into your shoulder, then I'd recommend an M44 or M38. The M44 looks neat as heck with the bayonet extended and that big muzzle flash - plus you can always bayonet charge the target if you miss... If you just want to hurt masochistically, get an Austrian/Hungarian M95 Stutzen in 8x56mm, and just hold it to your shoulder loosely. Oh, and Mosinitis is not only highly contagious - it's terminal! Once you try one, you're infected with the desire to collect all 46 million before you die gun-broke and deserted by your family...

| Senior Member | Thanks for all the feedback, i get paid again on Friday and budget be damned. Maybe ill just go out and pick up an m44 and a 91/30 just to try them out. (Pretty cheap at the local gun store) I just love the looks of them, and it would be great just to mess around after tryin to make quarter sized groups all day with my other rifles. Stress relief maybe? Around here i don't think many people consider buying or bringing Mosins down to the range. In my city, most of the people that shoot at the range have quite a bit of money and they dont really mess with these older milsurp guns. That might be a small setback because not many people will be around that can give me hands on help with certain things on the mosins, or just general knowledge of the firearm so i know what to expect. But for the price, i think ill get 'em anyhow. |

| Senior Member | let me put it thisway for you, when your at the range and someone next to you or even a few stalls down shoots a mosin off you can feel it in your chest! ive had people complain that it was throwing off there shots before.
