Tips on my next Mosin

Got a gun show to go to on Aug. 2nd. Wanting to pick up another Mosin to go with my other 4. Need some tips on what I need to look for in finding one that's a little harder to find. Help me out here guy's, what do I need to keep my eye's open for? Wanting to find one, I guess you would say on the rare side. Price, year, markings, whatever. Would kind of like to stay in the M44 style. But as long as it is hard to find, that's what I'll look for.

Here are some rare examples of M44s:

If it was made in 1943, it's rare.
If it was made by Tula, it's rare.
If it has a octagon-shaped reciever, it's extremely rare, Geo M44 has the only one I have ever seen.

buy a m38, its a bit more rare than the 91/30 and the m44. it is also much like a m44 just without the bayonet.

No, you can't David. The M38 was designed as a rifle/carbine (I think it's barrel is long enough to be a rifle; others disagree) to be issued to troops unlikely to need a rifle for fighting, like artillerymen, truck drivers, engineers and other support troops. Since they weren't going to be in the lines, the Soviet leadership figured they didn't need the ability to attach a bayonet to their shootin' iron. They were designed so you couldn't attach a bayonet, even if you wanted to. This saved the Soviets some money because they didn't need to make and issue more 91/30 style bayonets, too.

The Nazi invasion in 1941 showed this to be a bad decision. Plenty of support troops got bayonetted because they ran out of ammo and got caught in close combat with the Germans. This is what prompted the redesign of the M38 into the M44, which had its bayonet permanently attached so it would be handy if you ever needed it. The thought continued forward with the SKS, most of which have permanently attached bayonets that fold out of the way when not needed.

For shooting, I feel the M38 shoots better than the M44. But for close defense, I'd want either a 91/30 or an M44 - because they have bayonets and the M38 does not.

A minor correction: It's a hex receiver like the older 91/30's.
