Saw a couple of scenes the director obviously stole from Lilac Time, but a realistic portrayal of life on the Eastern Fron for the grunts of the Great Patriotic War (as the Russians call World War II).

What amused me was the Soviet soldier with the Schmeisser gleefully shooting a German tanker off his tank. Put me in mind of one of the few war stories my Dad ever told me.

When he was promoted to corporal in the Ninth Division in North Africa, he had the option of continuing to carry a rifle or switching to a Thompson. He took the Thompson. Later, a directive came down stating you had to be a buck sergeant or better to rate a Thompson, so his captain made him turn it back in for a Garang. Dad's response to this was to pick up a Schmeisser and start using that instead.

Evenutally, his captain told him to get rid of the Schmeisser. Dad said he would, if they'd just give him his M1927A4 Thommy Gun back. The captain ordered him to switch back, and Dad refused, demanding to see the battalion commander. The light colonel listened to both sides and ordered Dad to go back to the Garand. Dad refused and demanded to see the Colonel. So Dad and his captain ended up in front of the Old Man. Dad presented his case - that the squads needed firepower for the kind of up-close fighting they were in, and the captain reminded the Colonel of the directive. The Colonel thought about it for a minute and told Dad's captain to give him back his Thompson. He carried it for the rest of the war.

But it was interesting to see he wasn't the only Allied soldier who appreciated the virtues of the Schmeisser machine pistol.
