ok, i think i found what next "oddball mod" will be....gonna take a Griffin & Howe side mount base, it has an integral 3/8" dovetail on top, mount the base in same spot that a pu mount goes, side of receiver....hopefully after mounting some 3/8" scope rings, the "straight bolt" will clear....I already know that side-mounted scopes aren't best idea cuz you have to adjust windage AND elevation when resighting to another distance....but i'm still gonna do it just so i can say it's been done lol....gunsmith charges $45 to drill/tap receivers, so i shouldn't be TOO out-of-pocket for this....i will of course show pics and brag as usual lol

here's the 91/30 with the one-piece offset leapers mount and ncstar ler scope. it's about 1/4" higher than the regular one-piece mount but it sits in the right spot for me.

they weren't too concerned with "final machine work" under the rear sight, it seems. there was some rust hiding under there too. i did a "sharpie" re-blue till i get a chance to do the whole rifle.
hadn't noticed before but it shure does look worse in that pic.

yeah....you know where you can stick it gandog jkjk

R5, if you had buffed it a lil after it was removed, you could've gotten a smooth finish on that receiver....but seriously, who thinks mosins were made for looks? they were made for functionality Good Job there R5, but the way my scope is setup, is the eye-piece of scope is RIGHT around edge of receiver, hope that more forward setup is still within the eye relief, or you might be hugging the stock near the safety.

Also, since mine had the silver solder, it doesn't have any rust there, but I wonder if I can find a sharpie black that isn't as glossy as yours, that might give me a nice dull blue'd look....if you had used an ink that was a very dull black, it wouldn't have showed up as clear in the foto....maybe try breaking open a Bic pen lol.

ROFLMAO....got him there....and pirate, it works really well, just i wouldn't recommend using rings that have the steel clamp section, they won't bite very well....the renewed design is one that was later thought-up as a better setup, and that is the Leapers 1-piece setup, you can use either the offset mount like R5 used, or the standard one. Good Luck.

I can give personal testimony that using steel clamps will allow the scope to move. I used this set-up and fired a couple rounds. Seemed OK. Fired a couple more and something fell off. To my amazement, it was the rear stock ring. The scope had slid forward and broke it. Funny thing is, it was still on target.

So the Leapers is the better mount?

correct ron....the leapers is as stable as the individual rings; but some people's dovetails aren't milled just so perfectly....so I'd suggest just getting the Leapers mount, unless you already have your rear sight base off and your dovetail looks good and flat on top with a 3/8" dovetail being the same width-x-heighth front to back....my dovetail was perfect, but I heard someone else's dovetail wasn't machined to tolerance, and the dovetail was different widths/heights at different places on receiver, so the rings weren't setting correctly....so it required him using the 1-pc Leapers mount. If you scan up thru all the pics/comments on page-3, there should be some links somewhere up there. If not, I'll throw the link up really quick.

These are 3/8" mounts for 1" scopes, they are different heights tho, just select depending on how high you want your scope to set on top of receiver, also they are varying lengths:

Good Luck with your project.
