Well I am having fun with my Mosin-Nagant M44 and now I really want a 91/30. While shopping online I have been seeing the hex receivers and the round receivers. I want the one that would be in the better condition. My question is which one would probably be in the better condition? Is it worth the money to get the hand picked? Thanks for the feedback. |

seeing as the round ones are wartime production, i think you'll find most hex better looking in the finish dept. not sure on the hand-picked. it's not like they slug the bore or anything to guarantee the rifle can still shoot straight.

I myself perfer the Hex- some dates are older with more interesting rec makers. The round rec started about 35-36 about thoses years. This one is Foremost Ordnance Factory (of the) USSR at Tula 1923-1928 Old rec-updated to the 91/30 I think ![]() Just more info to make one want many more!! On the hand pick in my past still a crap shoot. Maybe wait till the shows in your area and then hand pick and also bore inspect.

I think the interwar hexes are the highest quality Russian-made Mosins. In wartime, the pressure is on to get as many rifles out the door as quickly as possible. In peacetime, the workers aren't under as much pressure to get out as many as possible, so a little more care is taken. The conventional wisdom is that the Tula rifles are better made and a little more accurate. I feel that the amount of use the rifle got is a better indicator of how accurate any Mosin is likely to be. If you are after a tack-driver, you need to get a Finnish Mosin. The Finns, especially the Sakos and the B barrels are thought to be the peak of Mosin accurace. Only thing is, they cost four times as much as Russian Mosins. Only you can decide if the extra money you have to pay to get a Finnish Mosin is worth it to you. |

Yeah the Finnish Mosins are amongst the best available, but a good peacetime hex will still be very good, and hex is supposed to be stronger than the round receiver. Ask Moose about his tack driver M39 sometime.

While you can't beat a nice M39, I would think general wisdom would place the M28/30 at the top of the heap as far as accuracy is concerned.

Thanks guys for the good info, I think I'm going to go with the hex receiver with the $10 hand pick. Now I just have to decide if I should buy from Aim or J&G |

I don't know that there are really any advantages of a hex over a round receiver. But, since they usually charge more for one, there ya go. Bought from both AIM and J&G, have had no problems with either. But you can get a Hex receiver from J&G for 10 bucks less, so that's the way I would go. |

mmhmm....hmmm, of the carbines, I would want an M91/59 for the accuracy, dunno if the czech's M91/38 is as accurate, but I want one of them just for kicks....and of course as many M91/30's I can get, so long as they are from 1930-1940....and round receivers are stated to have been released as 1936 models, altho there may be some '35 models somewheres. Hexes look cool, rounds look sleek....let's all do a 'Hex vs. Round' thread, kinda like the 'AR, AK, and Mosin' thread

And what would make a 91/59 more accurate than say a M38 or M44?

After long deliberations I have come to conclusion that if I see a older military rifle from the Eastern block with a straight or in sometimes bent bolt handle that shoots the 7.62x54R cartridge chances are very good that I will like it! Accuracy? Give me the longer guns any day. Shoulder those things and they are half the distance to the goal line!!!!
